On the afternoon of September 3, at the Government Press Conference in August 2026, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment (MARD) Dang Ngoc Diep informed about removing difficulties for durian exports.
According to Deputy Minister Dang Ngoc Diep, durian is one of the relatively valuable products in Vietnam, with an area of about 200,000ha and an output of about 2.08 million tons.
In 2021, our durian products exported for about 177 million USD. By 2025, Vietnam had exported for 3.85 billion USD, with a sudden increase in the past 5 years.
This is a key product of the crop industry and contributes about 40% of the crop industry's export output. In the first 8 months of this year alone, it is estimated to reach about 1.95 billion USD. The Chinese market contributes about 1.85 billion USD, accounting for about 95% of our market share.
The figures show that durian is a very valuable product. Therefore, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has paid special attention to and implemented solutions to remove difficulties and promote development in the past time.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has sent working groups to work directly with localities, especially large durian growing areas such as the Central Highlands, Southeast and Southwest regions to remove difficulties and obstacles.
Second, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has removed the difficulties and obstacles that businesses faced in the past in issuing planting area codes. This is one of the very practical removals that businesses appreciate highly.
Third, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has implemented strong decentralization and authorization for localities in the work of issuing planting area codes for all types of crops, including durian.
All types of durian are now decentralized to the ward and commune levels to issue planting area codes and packaging codes. In particular, in the past, when we cultivated intercropping, it was very difficult to implement planting area codes. Currently, intercropping is also assigned to the ward and commune levels to issue planting area codes, creating favorable conditions for durian exports," Mr. Diep informed.
Especially recently, leaders of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development also went to China. Through working sessions, the General Department of Customs of China issued 567 Vietnamese durian growing area codes, raising the total number of growing area codes to about more than 1,800 codes.
These are the results achieved and we are carrying out the remaining procedures to bring durian exports at least equal to last year's 3.85 billion USD or possibly higher, reaching about 4 billion USD in 2026," Mr. Diep predicted.
Regarding solutions, Deputy Minister Dang Ngoc Diep said that in the coming time, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development will promote trade promotion and export market diversification.
In which, continue to negotiate market expansion, increase market share in potential markets such as India, Australia, New Zealand. Increase exports of frozen durian, processed products, and suitable products.
Reorganize production, develop sustainable raw material areas; review production area planning suitable to land, water, and climate conditions. Develop concentrated raw material area infrastructure associated with preliminary processing, processing, preservation, consumption and export.
At the same time, connecting farmers, cooperatives, businesses and encouraging businesses to reinvest in raw material areas, gradually building the Vietnamese durian brand.
