On that development journey, the ethnic harmony policy has always been identified by the Party and State as a long-term strategic choice, a pillar in the great national unity bloc. We understand the historical causes leading to war from external intervention and division to plots to sabotage the spirit of solidarity, sowing hatred for political plots. But we also understand that: all Vietnamese people, whether at home or abroad, regardless of where they have been in history, have the same origin, a language, a love for their homeland and country.
In recent years, during business trips to almost every continent, I have had many opportunities to meet thousands of Vietnamese people living abroad - from young intellectuals who have established careers in Europe, America, Asia, and the ocean to successful businessmen, famous artists, and simple workers in the "new lands", including many people from the "other side" before. Each meeting left a deep impression on me: whether they were different in political views, historical experiences or living conditions, they all had national pride in their hearts, were "Vietnamese people" and a deep nostalgia for the two homelands.
I have witnessed many touching meetings between Vietnamese veterans and American veterans - who used to stand on both sides of the battle line, each holding a gun, now they can shake hands, talk, share with each other with sincere understanding and no longer guilt. Today, Vietnam and the United States - from the former enemy - have become a comprehensive strategic partner, cooperated for peace, for the benefit of the people of the two countries, for security and stability in the region. So there is no reason for Vietnamese people - to share the same blood, with an Au Co mother, always painful about a unified, prosperous country - also carrying forever in the heart of hatred, division and separation.
Ethnic harmony does not mean forgetting history or erasing differences, but rather accepting different perspectives in the spirit of tolerance and respect, to jointly aim for the greater goal: building a peaceful, unified, powerful, civilized, and prosperous Vietnam, so that future generations will never have to witness war, division, hatred, and loss like their ancestors faced.
We believe that all Vietnamese people - no matter where they live, no matter what the past is - can accompany, join hands, and contribute to building a bright future for the nation. The Party and State have always continuously extended their arms, appreciated all contributions, listened to all constructive and united voices from the overseas Vietnamese community - those who are contributing to connecting Vietnam with the world.
We cannot rewrite history, but we can re- shape the future. The past is to remember, to show gratitude and to learn lessons. The future is to build, create and develop together. That is the honorable promise of today's generation to those who have fallen, the common wish of a nation that has experienced many pain but has never been defeated.
50 years ago, the Vietnamese people wrote a brilliant heroic song with iron will and steadfastness - that is the harmony of will, determination, unity and peace. Half a century later, the same nation is continuing to write a new epic - a harmony of innovation, integration, development and the will to rise strongly in the 21st century. Previously, no genuine Vietnamese people wanted their country to be cut off. Today, certainly no genuine Vietnamese person would not like their country to become more and more powerful and prosperous alongside the world powers.
Looking forward continuously and creatively, innovatively and developmentally
More than anyone else, today's generation clearly understands that independence and unity are not the ultimate goal, but the starting point for a new journey: the journey to build a peaceful, prosperous, civilized, developed and lasting Vietnam.
