According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh welcomed and highly appreciated the President of the New Zealand National Assembly for his visit to Vietnam in the year of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries; and highly appreciated the good, substantive and comprehensive development of bilateral cooperation since the two countries upgraded their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during Prime Minister Christopher Luxon's official visit to Vietnam in February 2025.
The Speaker of the New Zealand Parliament affirmed that Vietnam is an important partner, the Government and the New Zealand Parliament prioritize strengthening relations with Vietnam in New Zealand's overall foreign policy in the region; said that the New Zealand Parliament is strongly committed to supporting the promotion of cooperation with Vietnam in all fields.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh thanked New Zealand for actively supporting Vietnam in the development process; emphasized that upgrading relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership is the result of the efforts of both sides over more than 50 years of developing diplomatic relations, opening a new chapter in the bilateral relationship; suggested that the two sides actively coordinate to concretize the high-level agreements reached, continuing to deepen cooperation commensurate with the framework of the relationship at a new level.
National Assembly Chairman Gerry Brownlee agreed with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh's proposal of "2 points more" to further deepen Vietnam - New Zealand cooperation in all areas, including deepening political and foreign relations, enhancing delegation exchanges and high-level contacts, maintaining bilateral cooperation mechanisms, effectively implementing signed documents; promptly proposing a strategy to connect the two economies, promoting the signing of cooperation agreements on economy, trade and investment, facilitating the opening of markets for each other's agricultural products, aiming to diversify the supply chain, striving to achieve the bilateral trade target of 3 billion VND by 2026; deploy new areas with potential for the two countries such as green economy, digital economy, cooperation in science and technology transformation, promoting the signing of cooperation in climate change; continue to promote international peace and security in the international community.
The two leaders also agreed to strengthen cooperation in education, training, student exchange, scientists and researchers; consider opening a direct flight connecting the two countries soon to promote people-to-people exchanges and economic and trade cooperation as well as cooperation between localities, facilitating businesses of the two countries to seek business and investment opportunities.
National Assembly Chairman Gerry Brownlee acknowledged the opinions of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on measures to promote bilateral relations; emphasized that Vietnam and New Zealand share the common interest in ensuring an uninterrupted multilateral international trade system and supply chain, ensuring stable and prosperous growth of each country as well as globally; affirmed that New Zealand highly appreciates the contributions of the Vietnamese community in New Zealand.
