On April 28, at the 33rd session (special session), the 13th term People's Council of Quang Ngai province, term 2021-2026, passed a Resolution on merging and consolidating Quang Ngai and Kon Tum provinces.
After the merger of Quang Ngai and Kon Tum, the new Quang Ngai province has an area of over 14,800km2 - the 4th largest in the country behind Lam Dong province (24,233.1 km2), Gia Lai (21,576.5 km2) and Dak Lak (18,096.4 km2) with 43 ethnic groups. There are 2 airports in the planning of two famous tourist destinations, Mang Den and Ly Son Island.
The new province will be called Quang Ngai province, the administrative unit of Quang Ngai province (new) has an area of 14,832.548 km2 (296.65% compared to the standard), population of 2,161,755 people (reaching 154.41% compared to the standard), with 96 administrative units at the commune level under the commune.

Adjacent administrative units at the same level: Da Nang City, Gia Lai Province; Sekong Province, attapeu Province of Laos and Ratanakiri Province of Cambodia.

According to the direction of the central government, the two provinces must complete the merger, ensuring that the new Quang Ngai province will be put into operation before September 1.
Regarding tourism and service development, Quang Ngai province has just opened a large space with many beautiful landscapes and scenic spots, such as: Mang Den National Tourist Area (called the 7th Da Lat); Ly Son Island (central area oriented to develop into a national center for sea and island tourism); Dong Duong intersection; Sa Huynh culture; Chu Mom Ray National Park...
Previously, localities in Quang Ngai had asked voters' opinions on the policy of arranging provincial-level administrative units. As a result, 99.65% of voters representing households agreed to merge Kon Tum and Quang Ngai provinces; People's Councils at the commune and district levels also met and issued a resolution approving the merger policy of the two provinces.
The merger of Quang Ngai and Kon Tum provinces is implemented according to Resolution No. 60-NQ/TW dated April 12 of the 11th Conference of the 13th Party Central Committee.
