On the afternoon of October 25, at the National Assembly House, Politburo member and National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man met with United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres within the framework of the General Secretary's official visit to Vietnam.
The National Assembly Chairman thanked the General Secretary's personal affection and valuable support, the effective contributions and support of the United Nations - Vietnam's trusted and loyal partner in the country's reconstruction as well as in the current cause of Innovation and comprehensive international integration.
Affirming that Vietnam always believes in, values and strongly supports multilateralism, the central role of the United Nations in global governance, the leadership and initiatives of the General Secretary and Chairman of the National Assembly, the Vietnamese President emphasized that Vietnam will continue to make more effective contributions to peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and the world, to the common work of the United Nations and multilateral cooperation, including inter-parliamentary and regional forums, especially within the framework of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
The UN Secretary-General expressed his special respect and affection for National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man, who was a Portuguese National Assembly member for 18 years, as well as his attachment and support for the cause of fighting for Vietnam's independence and unity.
Expressing his admiration for Vietnam's socio-economic development achievements, the General Secretary especially congratulated Vietnam for the results achieved in its recent rapid and profound reform, saying that Vietnam is a successful model in promoting sustainable development, implementing commitments on green transformation, digital transformation, innovation, creativity and strong reforms for rapid, strong, sustainable development and better service to the people, which are good experiences that can be shared with countries and the United Nations for reference. The General Secretary was impressed by the efforts and contributions of the Vietnamese National Assembly in this process and the urgent and active activities of the current National Assembly session.
The UN Secretary-General highly appreciated Vietnam's role, position and contributions with example, voice, intelligence and specific actions, especially in implementing the United Nations' major goals, as well as participating in peacekeeping activities, presiding over the Opening Ceremony of the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime.
The General Secretary also highly appreciated the active participation of the Vietnamese National Assembly in inter-parliamentary multilateral foreign affairs mechanisms, hoping that the Vietnamese National Assembly will continue to promote its active role and promote multilateral solutions for issues of common concern.
The two sides agreed to strengthen connections and promote cooperation mechanisms between the Vietnamese National Assembly and United Nations activities, and related multilateral mechanisms, especially inter-parliamentary cooperation, in implementing global initiatives.
