On October 25, at the Party Central Committee Headquarters, General Secretary To Lam received United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, on the occasion of the General Secretary's official visit to Vietnam and attending the Opening Ceremony of the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the meeting took place in a friendly and trusting atmosphere, demonstrating the increasingly close and effective cooperation between Vietnam and the United Nations.
Pleased to meet Mr. Guterres in Hanoi again after more than a year, General Secretary To Lam expressed his appreciation for the precious affection and support of the United Nations and the General Secretary, a sincere and loyal friend who has always accompanied and supported Vietnam since joining the United Nations in 1977. The Vietnam - United Nations relationship is one of the outstanding success stories and is currently taking a new page.
Affirming strong support for multilateralism with the United Nations playing a central role, the General Secretary emphasized that Vietnam is clearly aware of its responsibility, ready to participate in solving global issues such as maintaining peace, handling conflicts, promoting development, ensuring human rights, responding to climate change, etc.
With a deep awareness of the value of peace, Vietnam supports the settlement of disputes and conflicts by peaceful means, in accordance with the United Nations Charter and international law. The General Secretary suggested that the General Secretary support Vietnam in participating more deeply in this field, especially in participating in United Nations peacekeeping activities in the context of unpredictable conflicts in the world.
Thanking the United Nations and other countries for trusting and supporting Vietnam as a member of the Human Rights Council for two consecutive terms, the General Secretary said that this is the clearest proof of Vietnam's commitments and achievements in ensuring the rights and interests of the people.
The UN Secretary-General shared his special feelings every time he visited Vietnam, associated with memories of the past struggle to support Vietnam.
The General Secretary expressed his confidence that under the leadership of General Secretary To Lam, Vietnam will achieve the major goals set out, including achieving double-digit growth in the coming years, and having a more weighty role and voice in the international arena, actively contributing to strengthening multilateralism, reforming multilateral institutions so that developing countries and emerging countries have a more worthy role.
Considering Vietnam a basic pillar of South-South cooperation and of a balanced and stable multipolar world order, based on international law, the General Secretary hopes that Vietnam will strongly support the reform of the United Nations in a balanced manner, maintain development assistance activities, especially for developing countries, and combat unilateral actions.
