Vietnam - Laos: "One-of-a-kind" relationship in international relations

On the afternoon of January 26, at the National Assembly House, Politburo Member, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man met with General Secretary and President of Laos Thongloun Sisoulith on the occasion of his state visit to Vietnam.

At the meeting, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man warmly welcomed General Secretary of the Central Executive Committee of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party (NDCM), Lao President Thongloun Sisoulith and the high-level delegation of the Lao Party and State to visit the State level of Vietnam.

The National Assembly Chairwoman emphasized that the State visit of Comrade Thongloun Sisoulith is of utmost importance, taking place in the context of the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CSVN) and the 12th National Congress of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party, which were just successfully organized, marking important turning points in the development process of each country.

The National Assembly Chairwoman affirmed that the success of each country's Congress is vivid proof of the correct leadership of the two Parties; thereby creating a solid political foundation for the two countries to continue to strengthen comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and Laos, a "one-of-a-kind" relationship in international relations.

National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man, on behalf of the National Assembly and people of Vietnam, congratulated Comrade Thongloun Sisoulith on continuing to be trusted by the Lao Party and State to be elected as General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party.

The National Assembly Chairwoman expressed her pleasure at the outstanding progress in economic and trade cooperation between Vietnam and Laos, an important pillar of the great friendship and special solidarity between the two countries; in which bilateral trade turnover in 2025 reached nearly 3 billion USD, an increase of about 32.7% compared to 2024.

Regarding cooperation between the two legislative bodies, the National Assembly Chairwoman proposed that the two legislative bodies continue to strengthen close coordination at regional and international parliamentary forums. The Vietnamese National Assembly will continue to strengthen high-level delegation exchanges, share legislative experience, supervision, cooperation; closely coordinate to remove difficulties, expand new areas of cooperation such as digital economy, green energy transition, infrastructure connection, education and training, in accordance with the orientation after the XII Congress of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party and the XIV Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam.

The National Assembly Chairwoman emphasized that in the context of the complex world and regional situation, the role of the National Assembly is increasingly affirmed in institutionalizing the Party's guidelines into laws, supreme supervision and decision-making on important issues of the country, representing the will and right to mastery of the people.

General Secretary and President of Laos Thongloun Sisoulith expressed his pleasure to be the first foreign leader to visit Vietnam at the State level right after the successful 14th Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam.

Comrade Thongloun Sisoulith highly agreed with the exchanges and proposals of National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man on strengthening cooperation between the two National Assemblies. He expressed his desire for the National Assemblies of the two countries to continue to promote cooperation and exchange experiences in the fields of legislation, supreme supervision, especially the implementation of bilateral economic cooperation agreements, especially key cooperation projects.

In the next 5 years, the National Assemblies of the two countries will strengthen coordination to effectively implement the resolutions of the two Parties, bringing the Vietnam-Laos parliamentary cooperation relationship to develop more and more deeply and substantively.

The comrade affirmed that the Lao National Assembly will continue to closely coordinate with the Vietnamese National Assembly in exchanging experiences, improving the effectiveness of parliamentary activities and strengthening supervision of the implementation of signed high-level cooperation agreements.
