Talking to an expert in the field of security at VPBank, this person said that in an effort to help customers minimize the risk of losing money due to being tricked by fraudsters into transferring money to fraudulent accounts, VPBank has initially created a "blacklist" of accounts in the bank's system that are suspected of being fraudulent accounts.
“We are working with A05 (the Department of Cyber Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention under the Ministry of Public Security), in conjunction with NAPAS, to build a database system containing all fake accounts, or those marked as fraudulent and scam.
Every time a customer transfers money to these accounts, we will issue a warning, and for accounts that we are sure are fraudulent, we will block the transfer transaction,” the expert shared.
In the near future, the database of accounts marked as fraudulent is expected to be expanded to an interbank scale, helping customers of banks in the system minimize the risk of being tricked into transferring money, or mistakenly transferring money, to fraudulent accounts.
At present, for transactions of mistakenly transferring money to fraudulent accounts in general, this expert said that the ideal time for the bank to freeze the amount of money mistakenly transferred or fraudulently transferred to a fraudulent account is one day, which means that customers need to quickly notify the bank and authorities as soon as they discover the fraud.
Currently, not many banks in the system have proactively built a list of fraudulent accounts, sent warnings and automatically blocked money transfers to fraudulent accounts like VPBank. This solution is considered an important step forward to help protect banking app users from sophisticated fraud tricks of high-tech criminals, especially in the context that people are still not vigilant against familiar fraud methods.
For example, a resident in Dan Phuong district, Hanoi, was recently tricked into installing fake VNeID software, and was asked by a subject claiming to be a district police officer to transfer money to the bank to pay the application fee. After scanning the QR code to authenticate the face and transferring the bank account OTP to the impersonator, the victim discovered that 1 billion VND had been lost from the bank account.
Installing fake software like the case of the victim mentioned above has led to the risk of personal phones being taken over, personal information being leaked, and money being lost from bank accounts in applications on the phone...
In addition to the bank's continuous efforts to provide security solutions, many experts in the banking and security fields recommend that customers also need to proactively equip themselves with knowledge to use banking apps responsibly and effectively, to prevent the risk of personal information being leaked, being tricked into transferring money, or taking control of mobile devices...
The first thing that the expert from VPBank reminded digital banking users to do is to set up a strong enough password to prevent hackers from guessing passwords through information collected from many different sources.
Along with that, practicing biometric authentication to log in and authenticate banking transactions can help users create an additional layer of defense, when the user's biological characteristics have been registered with the bank and are difficult to fake. In addition, to increase the security level of banking apps and mobile devices, users need to update new versions of banking software and apps regularly.
Users are also advised not to access strange links, scan QR codes of unknown origin, not to share OTP authentication codes with anyone and under any circumstances, and not to save passwords on applications on mobile devices.
“In case of detecting fraud, personal information disclosure leading to loss of money in bank accounts, or access to mobile devices being taken over, users need to urgently lock their accounts on the banking app. Then, change the password to access the banking app and contact the bank's customer service center to report the situation, and at the same time block related accounts, delete recent login sessions...” - VPBank experts instructed.
According to him, these are necessary steps to preserve customer accounts and avoid further damage while coordinating with the investigation agency and the bank to remedy the damage.
In addition to the feature of blocking deposits into fraudulent accounts as mentioned, banking applications such as VPBank NEO have introduced to users outstanding protection features such as warnings about security vulnerabilities; biometric authentication during the first login or login on a strange device; preventing potential risks on users' mobile devices being infected with malware or at risk of having access taken over...
