Gold price forecast
World gold prices are receiving simultaneous support from the weakening of the USD, falling US bond yields and expectations of less tough monetary policy. After three consecutive increasing sessions, the precious metal at one point surpassed 4,175 USD/ounce, reaching its highest level in about a month.
In the short term, the direction of gold prices still largely depends on US economic data. Investors are focusing on monitoring the ADP private sector jobs report, service index and July jobs report. These figures will provide more signals about the health of the labor market, inflation and the possibility of the US Federal Reserve (Fed) adjusting interest rates in upcoming meetings.
If economic data is lower than forecast, the USD and bond yields may continue to weaken, thereby creating conditions for gold prices to maintain their upward momentum. Conversely, reports showing that the US economy is still solid may cause expectations of the Fed raising interest rates to return, putting profit-taking pressure on the precious metals market.
Oil price movements are also becoming a noteworthy factor. Crude oil decreases help limit concerns about inflation, causing the market to narrow forecasts about the possibility of the Fed continuing to raise interest rates. However, information related to the US-Iran situation and transportation through the Strait of Hormuz may still cause oil prices, the USD and gold to fluctuate sharply in the short term.
From a medium and long-term perspective, the gold buying demand of central banks continues to create a foundation to support the market. The fact that the Bank of Korea returned to buying gold for the first time since 2013 shows that the trend of diversifying foreign exchange reserves shows no signs of ending.
South Korea is expected to implement a step-by-step buying strategy, instead of carrying out a large transaction. This approach is unlikely to create an immediate shock to gold prices, but may strengthen long-term demand, especially in the context of geopolitical risks becoming a constant factor.
After an increase of more than 2%, gold prices may experience technical corrections due to profit-taking activities. However, if the USD continues to weaken, bond yields fall and central bank buying activities are maintained, the main trend of gold is still assessed as positive.
