LD25010: Heartbroken for a student without a mother, a father with a traumatic brain injury, and a risk of dropping out of school

Vinh Long - The family temporarily lives on the land of an acquaintance, the father suffered a traumatic brain injury after a traffic accident, was hospitalized without insurance, and his life was in difficulty.

We went to the residence of father and son Tran Minh Tam, born in 2007, in Hoa Ninh commune, Long Ho district, which was just a small hut in the middle of a fiber garden on the land of a local resident. The four walls of the leaves have rotted and patched roughly, the corrugated iron roofs are left with traces of many rainy and sunny seasons.

Inside, the space was narrow and dark, the most valuable asset was probably an old bed and a few minimalist household items. The lack of electricity and clean water makes life here even more harsh.

Tran Minh Tam said that every day he still needs to diligently walk through the muddy road, then cycle for kilometers to Hoa Ninh High School.

Currently, she lives with her father over 60 years old, and her mother left when she was young. His father is a thin person, still having to struggle to make a living in all kinds of jobs from renting coconut to driving motorbike taxis. Unstable income, no meals, not enough to cover the minimum living expenses for the father and son.

"On January 3, on his way home from work, his father had an accident, suffered a traumatic brain injury, and was hospitalized without insurance. I have to drop out of school to take care of my father. Currently, my father needs brain surgery due to blood clots and my family doesn't have money to worry about the cost," Tam added.

Mrs. Muoi, Tam's aunt, said: " Tam has been miserable since childhood, his mother left him a miserable family, Tam's father alone took care of Tam's education but his health was increasingly poor.

Without land, without household registration, Tam is not approved for support policies for poor students. In grade 9 (2024), Tam was almost unable to get a citizen ID card to enter grade 10. Seeing his pity, he was allowed to join the army so he could continue his studies."

Talking to Lao Dong, Mr. Nguyen Hoang Nguyen - Chairman of the People's Committee of Hoa Ninh commune - said that the family situation of Tram Minh Tam in Binh Thuan 2 hamlet, Hoa Ninh commune is extremely difficult.

However, because Tam's father left the locality many years ago and had only returned to Hoa Ninh for about three years, and had no land to build a house, the locality encountered many obstacles in approving support according to regulations.

Currently, agencies and units in the commune and the Provincial Red Cross Society are making efforts to mobilize benefactors to join hands to help Tam's family have a more solid place to live.

"This will be an important basis for the locality to be able to review support policies for poor and near-poor households in accordance with regulations. A solid home, a support at this time is extremely valuable, giving the poor, studious student a dream", Mr. Nguyen added.
