For nearly two months, Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan and her husband have been on duty day and night at Hanoi Children's Hospital to take care of their third child - Nguyen Huu Chi (born in 2018), who is being treated for pneumonia and cerebral palsy.
Chi is the third child in a family of four siblings. When he was 6 months old, his parents saw that their child was unable to walk and had unusually stiff limbs, so they took him to the doctor for examination and diagnosed him with cerebral palsy. Since then, the terrible cerebral palsy has prevented him from developing normally.
For about 2 months now, he has had red rash and pneumonia, so he has had to be hospitalized at Ba Vi General Hospital for treatment. After two weeks of treatment, his condition became worse, and he was transferred to Hanoi Children's Hospital. Here, he had to breathe CPAP, then take oxygen in the Intensive Care Unit, and continue to be treated in the Infectious Diseases Unit.
The family was already in difficulty, but now that he has undergone prolonged treatment, the family's finances are increasingly depleted.

Chi's father is a construction worker, his job is unstable, and after a few days he has to ask for a subsidy to cover daily living expenses. Her mother is a freelancer, earning about 2 million VND per month. Recently, Chi has been in the hospital for a long time, so Ms. Lan and her husband have to take turns taking a day off work to take care of their children, which means they have almost no income.
Not only did Chi get sick, her eldest sister in grade 5 also recently discovered a tumor in her kidneys and was being monitored to determine whether the tumor was healthy or malignant. Chi's second sister also has TIC syndrome (abnormal muscle activation, uncontrolled repetition), and has to be treated and given medicine every two months at the National Children's Hospital.
Because of the difficult family and low income, for Ms. Lan and her husband, each child is a worry, an endless battle. I was really helpless, not knowing what to do next. The family of paternal and maternal grandparents is also in difficulty, unable to help much, every time there is a lack of money to take care of the children, my husband and I have to borrow from here and there," said Ms. Lan.
Currently, Chi receives 1,750,000 VND/month from the Children's Support Fund, 350,000 VND and 350,000 VND/year from the Vietnam Association of Young Parents with Cerebral Palsy, but this amount is just a drop in the ocean while treatment, medicine, and living expenses are increasing.
