We came to the Great Solidarity house of Mr. Duong Van Tung's family (born in 1989) in Bang Chang hamlet, Tra Con commune, Vinh Long province. The house had just been handed over for less than a week, the walls and walls still smelled of new paint, but it could not fill the strong smell of strong medicine and the gloom of the faces suffering from illness.
Mr. Tung said that about 5 years ago, he was diagnosed with kidney disease. Due to difficult circumstances, treatment was not maintained adequately, causing the disease to become increasingly severe. To date, he is forced to have periodic dialysis 3 times a week in Can Tho City to maintain his life.
Before, when he was healthy, he worked as a hired laborer, doing whatever he asked to take care of his wife and children. Since he became seriously ill, he no longer has the strength to work, all expenses depend on the help of relatives and neighbors," Mr. Tung shared.
To have money for treatment, the family sold all 1,000m2 of land - the largest asset left by their parents. Not stopping there, economic pressure and disease shock caused Mr. Tung's wife to fall into severe depression and lose her ability to work.
Mr. Tung's monthly drug and travel expenses for dialysis are more than 3 million VND. For a family with no stable income, this is an expense exceeding his ability.
In the new house, what worries Mr. Tung the most is not his own illness, but his daughter's future. When all expenses depend on the care of relatives and neighbors, continuing to send his daughter to school becomes a constant worry.
Mr. Tam Hanh - a neighbor of Mr. Tung's family - said: "Mr. Tung's family has been poor for a long time. Since he became seriously ill, it's considered falling into a dead end. The people around love him very much, everyone contributes a little, but it can only help at first, it cannot last long.
Talking to Lao Dong Newspaper, Mr. Ha Van Thanh Khuong - Chairman of Tra Con Commune People's Committee - said that the whole commune currently has 119 poor households and 262 near-poor households. Mr. Tung's family is one of the poor households that the locality regularly monitors and supports.
Recently, the commune has mobilized resources to build a Great Solidarity house for Mr. Tung's family, helping to have a stable place to live. However, the cost of long-term treatment and the children's education exceeds the local support capacity, and greatly needs attention and help from the community and philanthropists," Mr. Khuong said.
Leaving Bang Chang hamlet late in the afternoon, the image of the thin father next to the medicine bags in the new house is still haunting. There are places to shelter from rain and sun, but the journey to fight for life and keep the dream of going to school for his son of Mr. Tung's family still has many hardships ahead.
