At the Department of Pediatrics of Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Chau Huynh Thien Khang (born in 2022) is fighting illness every day. Less than 4 years old, Khang has been hospitalized for more than 3 years, associated with needles, medicine and prolonged shortness of breath.
The baby's parents, Mr. Chau Trung Hieu and Ms. Huynh Thi Cam Chau (both born in 2001), from Le Thuy commune, Quang Tri province, are both workers. When Khang was not sick, life was already difficult. The upheaval came when Khang was only a few months old...
In the early days, the baby continuously had a fever, cough and shortness of breath. The family took him to the district level for treatment, but the disease did not improve. After many hospitalizations and transfers, baby Khang was diagnosed with severe pneumonia. After a period of hospitalization and stable treatment, Khang was discharged from the hospital, but only a few days after discharge, the baby relapsed with a worsening condition, forcing the family to return to the hospital in extreme anxiety...
There were nights when my child had difficulty breathing and turned purple, my husband and I were worried and just hugged our child and ran to the hospital in panic...", Ms. Chau recalled.
After many unsuccessful treatments, the family took Khang to Hue when he was only 4 months old. Here, doctors determined that he had severe pneumonia and congenital laryngeal cartilage softening. The treatment process was prolonged, each hospitalization was usually more than a month. But every time he came home for one or two days, the baby would have a shortness of breath and had to be hospitalized again.
Not stopping there, when the condition relapsed continuously, baby Khang was transferred to Hanoi for in-depth examination. The results showed that he also had bronchial asthma and congenital immunodeficiency, making treatment even more complicated and prolonged.

In March 2025, baby Khang underwent his first surgery. The journey of treatment has not stopped, the pain makes him often cry, and some days he cannot eat or drink...
Currently, the cost of treatment for baby Khang is a heavy burden for Mr. Hieu and Ms. Chau. On average, the cost of medicine and treatment can be up to 30-50 million VND per month; the cost of infusion alone is about 15-20 million VND. To have money to treat their child, Mr. Hieu and his wife had to borrow a large sum of money from the bank.
Meanwhile, the family's income is only about 10 million VND/month, mainly from the husband's work. Since her child became seriously ill, Ms. Chau has almost had to quit her job to be on duty with her child in the hospital.
As long as there is still an opportunity, my husband and I will still try our best to save our child...", Ms. Chau said choked up.
Currently, baby Khang still has to continue long-term treatment, with many consecutive hospitalizations. Meanwhile, the debt is increasing day by day, and family life is increasingly deadlocked.
During the long days in the hospital, baby Khang still fought bravely. Sometimes he was weak, but when things got better, his eyes lit up with hope, making parents love their children even more, and even more determined to treat their children...
Talking to Lao Dong reporters, Mr. Le Van Thuong - Head of Phu Tho village (Le Thuy commune, Quang Tri province) said that Mr. Hieu's family is classified as a poor household, especially difficult in the locality.
Mr. Hieu's family situation is very pitiful, the couple is still young, low income, but his son is seriously ill, and the treatment costs are high. The locality has also paid attention to supporting him, but it is not enough compared to the long-term treatment cost of the boy. We hope philanthropists will help the family have more funds to treat him...", Mr. Thuong shared.
