LD26137: Family exhausted after 14 years of struggling to save the life of brain-damaged son

For many years, a poor family in Hue City has struggled to treat their child with a serious illness, and the originally poor family situation is now even more exhausted...

In a small, cramped house in Minh Thanh group, Hoa Chau ward (Hue City), Ms. Le Thi Hien (born in 1982) is on duty every day with her son, Huynh Van Huy (born in 2012). Huy is almost lying in one place, unable to sit or take care of himself due to cerebral palsy, convulsive epilepsy and prolonged severe pneumonia.

At 14 years old, due to illness, Huy could not go to school like his peers. Huy's legs and arms were contracted, he could not sit on his own or live normally, everything depended on his mother's care.

Recalling the early days of giving birth, Ms. Hien still cannot forget the feeling of panic when she saw her child constantly having seizures.

At that time, my child was just born, every 15 minutes she would have convulsions. The doctor had to urgently transfer her to Hue Central Hospital for treatment. I could only cover my face and cry because I was too scared," Ms. Hien choked up.

The following years were a series of days when the family took Huy for examination and treatment everywhere. When he was 2 years old, Huy was diagnosed with severe brain damage, which was the cause of prolonged seizures. By the age of 4, Huy began to use specialized anticonvulsant drugs. Although the frequency of seizures gradually decreased, the disease did not completely subside.

A major event continued to happen when Huy turned 7 years old. The joints in his limbs began to contract abnormally, his muscles gradually became stiff and then he lost the ability to move. From a child who could even move lightly, Huy gradually had to lie motionless in one place. Not only suffering from neurological diseases, he also often suffered from severe pneumonia. Every time the weather changed or his resistance decreased, Huy had to be hospitalized for treatment for many days.

According to Ms. Hien, currently her son has to use 3 to 4 different types of medicine each day to control seizures and reduce pain. The cost of special medicine alone is about 50,000 VND per day.

“The doctor said that my child must take medicine for life, if she stops taking medicine, the disease will become more severe, dangerous to life. The family is in difficulty but still has to try to maintain treatment for her child...”, Ms. Hien said sadly.

For the past 14 years, Ms. Hien has almost put aside all work and life plans to be with her child. Previously, she sold vegetables at the market, earning only a few tens of thousands of VND per day, since Huy became seriously ill, she had to quit her job to take care of her child full-time.

Difficulties piled up when Ms. Hien herself also suffered injuries. In 2008, while pregnant with her second child, she had a serious traffic accident that almost completely lost her eyesight.

The family's main source of income currently depends on Mr. Huynh Van Thi (born in 1979) - Ms. Hien's husband. He is a freelancer but has also suffered from herniated disc for many years. On days when his health is stable, Mr. Thi tries to go to work to earn money to take care of the family; when the disease recurs, he has to take long days off work. In addition to living expenses, each month he also spends about 2 million VND on medicine and examination.

Ms. Hien and Mr. Thi's family has four children. In addition to Huy, the other three children are all obedient and study well. The second daughter, Huynh Thi Cam Tu (2008), has been a good student for many consecutive years, understanding her family circumstances, Tu always takes advantage of working part-time to share the burden with her parents.

According to Ms. Hien, the total amount of money the family has spent on Huy's treatment to date exceeds 500 million VND. All savings have run out, and loans from banks, relatives and relatives have not been fully repaid.

Currently, Huy's health is still very weak, and needs to continue long-term treatment and use medication regularly. Meanwhile, the family situation has fallen into exhaustion after many years of fighting illness...

Talking to a reporter of Lao Dong Newspaper, Mr. Nguyen Van Cu - Head of Minh Thanh residential group, Hoa Chau ward, Hue City said that Ms. Le Thi Hien's family is in particularly difficult circumstances in the locality.

For many years, the family has had to borrow money to treat Huy with cerebral palsy, epilepsy and severe pneumonia, all resources have been exhausted. We hope philanthropists and readers near and far will pay attention and share so that the family has more conditions to continue treating him," Mr. Cu shared.
