On November 9, BBC CEO Tim Davie and news director Deborah Turness both resigned. The incident came after BBC was involved in a scandal, accused of deliberately "cutting" US President Donald Trump's speech in the documentary Panorama. This scandal dealt a heavy blow to the reputation of BBC, which is considered a symbol of the UK independent press.
British Media Group (BBC) was established in 1922 with the mission of acting for the public good, openly and transparently. Although it has gained widespread popularity thanks to its global news activities and entertainment and sports programs, BBC is also often the focus of criticism for its reporting style and its involvement in behind-the-scenes scandals.
Jimmy Savile - November 2012
George enthwistle has resigned as CEO in less than two months of his tenure. The reason is that BBC's "Newsnight" has decided not to broadcast an investigation report. The report revealed that famous host Jimmy Savile was involved in repeated serious wrongdoings against young girls.
Worse, the station has also reported false information, linking a prominent politician to similar allegations.
Scandal with BBC President - April 2023
Another scandal with BBC Chairman Richard Sharp. A report concluded that he lacked transparency on conflicts of interest.
The report found that Mr. Sharp (a former bank owner) helped arrange a loan for the then-Prime Minister, Mr. Boris Johnson. It is worth mentioning that just a few weeks after assisting in this, Mr. Sharp was nominated by the government (led by Mr. Johnson) for the position of Chairman of BBC.
Sharp did not declare the connection during his appointment, leading to his resignation.
The trick behind the 'blockbuster' interview with Confucius Diana - 2021
The 1995 interview scandal with Miss Diana was also a big black spot, forcing the BBC board to later apologize.
In 2021, CEO Tim Davie had to publicly apologize after an investigation report concluded: Journalist Martin Bashir used a fake bank account to convince his brother-in-law Diana to get a "blockbuster" interview in 1995.
Although Davie was not working at the BBC at the time of the incident, as a leader in 2001, he had to issue a comprehensive and unconditional apology. He also sent an official apology to Prince Charles (now King Charles) and his two sons (Prince William and Harry).
The scandal of a top news anchor - July 2023
Another serious scandal involves Huw Edwards, the highest-paid news host on BBC. He was initially suspended from work for allegedly paying a teenager to take sensitive photos. He later pleaded guilty and was sentenced to suspended imprisonment during the investigation.
