AI music opens up opportunities and challenges for artists

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is making a significant turning point in music. From the role of supporting harmony and arrangement, AI is now able to compose a complete song, even "singing" like a singer.

The time of AI composing as musicians, singing as singers

In Vietnam, some pilot projects are quickly grasping this trend. Technology engineer Nguyen Hoang Bao Dai once attracted attention when building an AI model capable of writing 10 songs in just 1 second. At the end of 2022, the HOZO International Music Festival (HCMC) will witness the debut of two virtual singers Michau and Damsan. In March 2023, the virtual singer Ann debuted, and has since released a number of MVs such as "Lam sao noi yeu anh", "Cry".

Most recently, the song "Say a lifetime for you" created a strong effect on social networks with millions of views and a series of short videos on TikTok, and was covered ( sang) by many singers. It is worth mentioning that the song is a product composed by author Ken Quach - HUONG MYBONG with 10% AI and performed by "singer" AI. After that, singer Nguyen Vu decided to renew the song with an official MV released on September 25. His version received many compliments, was evaluated by the audience as more emotional and "soul-powered" than the AI version.

Nguyen Vu himself also affirmed: "Technology can create melodies, but only humans can convey the soul of music".

The threat and limitation of AI in music

Experts say that AI can help save time and open up ideas. However, music is inherently associated with emotions and personal experiences, so it is difficult for AI to completely replace real artists. In addition, the issue of copyright and intellectual property rights when AI participates in creation is also a big challenge that needs to be solved.

Musician Nguyen Van Chung - Author of a series of hits tiep tuc chuyen hoa, Noi dau trong hoa, Nhat ky cua me... shared with Lao Dong reporter: AI-composed music is a technological product, not a work of art. AI synthesizes, analyzes data and extracts results, while art requires creativity and vibration - illogical elements that AI cannot have.

Nguyen Van Chung himself has experimented with AI integration in composition but found that this tool only stops at the level of information synthesis, not touching the depth of emotions.

He affirmed: AI uses logic as a standard, while artistic creation is based on personal emotions and creativity. Therefore, these two fields are difficult to overthrow each other.

The musician believes that AI will be an opportunity for new musicians because it is an endless source of knowledge for them to refer to, learn, and learn. But it is also a challenge for new musicians when having to compete with AI music itself.

Young musician Hua Kim Tuyen was born in 1995 and is the author of a series of hits such as "Cau hon", "Nguoi ta co luong minh", "Nep nha", "A ngan dao dau"... He is also the author of many famous songs associated with the names of Van Mai Huong, Truc Nhan, Ha Anh Tuan...

Discussing the issue of AI-composed music, Hua Kim Tuyen said that each era has a new technology that forces creators to adapt. AI is a tool of the times. AI has now penetrated every aspect of life, including music. It can write lyrics, suggest melodies, arrangement... but because it is a machine, it is still very "common", lacking human experience, emotions, and personal perspectives. Therefore, artists must invest more in their gray, individual, and creative qualities to stand out, instead of just doing things that AI can do, Xu Jin Tuyen commented.

According to Hua Kim Tuyen, AI will help musicians save time, suggest ideas, but cannot replace breathing and real experience. When wanting a music product to truly have a "soul", the singer still has to work with the producer (producer), with the musician, and cannot only develop with AI songs. He commented that if AI is considered a supporting tool, artists will be stronger, but if they rely entirely on it, quality and personality will dissolve.

According to musician To Hieu - author of "Em di xa that xa", "Nham morow xanh"... he has actually discussed with many colleagues. They expressed concern as AI increasingly encroached on the creative field. Many songs made by AI are quite good, listening to them makes the musician feel discouraged. However, AI compositions are emotionless and sometimes forced to negative. That is the most obvious limitation, besides the fact that AI can compose with countless quantities, musician To Hieu shared.
