Movie “Revolver” (Đả nữ báo thù) officially released in South Korea on August 7, and is expected to be released in Vietnam on August 23.
Initially expected due to the participation of the three talented actors Jeon Do Yeon, Ji Chang Wook, and Lim Ji Yeon, however, the media has not given a high evaluation of the film.
According to Yohap, contrary to the title, “Revolver” is not an action movie but a psychological film, focusing on the relentless pursuit of Ha Soo Young, a former police officer who was imprisoned after committing a crime and is determined to recover the debt after being released.
Although Jeon Do Yeon's performance as a woman haunted by unpaid debt is impressive, being calm and cold one moment and full of energy and ferocity the next, the content of the film is still lacking in its execution.
According to the Korean press, “Revolver” is focusing too much on the female lead, causing the surrounding characters such as police chief Lim (Lee Jung Jae), Andy (Ji Chang Wook), and Jung Yoon Sun (Lim Ji Yeon) to be underdeveloped, making the plot disjointed and monotonous.
On the other hand, the numerous dialogue scenes, the slow storytelling in most of the runtime, and the over-reliance on Jeon Do Yeon's name are drawbacks in the new work of director Oh Seung Uk.
However, in a recent interview with Korea Herald, the Cannes Film Festival winner praised director Oh - who she had collaborated with in the film “The Shameless” (Vô cảm, 2015).
According to the actress, she had promised Oh Seung Uk that she would participate in the film, so she constantly reminded herself of creative ways to play the new character and tried not to reveal too much emotion and be as humble as possible.
“I was worried that this would be a dry film, but the director has enriched the existing story in a simple and easy-to-understand direction. I hardly showed any emotions throughout the filming process, but the final cut that we all saw seems to have more colors with the nuances of the story.”
According to Jeon Do Yeon, the vivid description of the character Ha Soo Young that she played is thanks to the interaction with the surrounding characters, including actor Lee Jung Jae. In addition, the actress praised the director's ingenuity.
“I feel like I've found a 'new face' that I've always hidden, as director Oh said. Since I'm not familiar with the production secrets like directors, I always trust their guidance.
Actively approaching them to find the 'right path' to help the film is a constant thought in me.”
