Bringing young people closer to traditional music
Recently, singer Toc Tien caused a stir with the performance “Lien khuc 3 nang” with a strong traditional feel on the stage “Sister Who Makes Wave 2024”. With a modern performance style, the female singer performed a smooth mashup of songs such as “Beo dat May troi”, “Bai ca dat phuong nam” with “Em trong mat toi” and “Hello Vietnam”, receiving a lot of praise from the audience. And Toc Tien is just one of the young artists who are bridging the gap between young audiences and traditional music.
At the program “Call Me by Fire”, many performances such as “Trong com”, “Dao leiu”, “Chiec khan pieu”… made many young audiences burst into tears when they heard traditional songs in a very modern, very youthful way. In these programs, new audiences had the opportunity to witness young artists such as Soobin Hoang Son singing “Chiec khan pieu”, or rapper Binz singing cheo with “Dao leiu” with People’s Artist Thu Huyen…
Traditional songs that are familiar to many generations are now transformed into youthful, modern versions with new choreography and rap, once again conquering young people - those who are attracted to US-UK songs, Kpop trends, or Hiphop and Rap music at present.
The song “Trong com” by People’s Artist Tu Long, Soobin Hoang Son, Cuong Seven once reached the Top Trending on YouTube and created a fever on social networks. This is quite surprising when a folk song can receive much love, especially from young audiences. This is explained because the new melodies of “Trong com” are performed by 3 artists in a youthful way combined with choreography but still do not lose the national value and identity of the song.
In addition to new remixes, the stages of the "brothers and sisters" shows are invested in grandly and elaborately staged, satisfying both the audience's hearing and vision, and creating more attraction for these works.
Spreading national culture
Below the videos of performances such as “Lien khuc 3 nang”, “Trong com”, “Dao lieu”, “Mua tren pho Hue”,... many young audiences expressed their love and desire for the traditional artistic values of the nation to be closer to young people as the artists have conveyed.
Explaining the appeal of traditional music in recent times, musician Giang Son said that the combination with modern music has brought young audiences closer to traditional music.
“It is possible that listening to traditional songs in the old version will make many young people feel uninspired, so renewing those songs with modern arrangements, updated according to new trends will make young people listen, feel attracted and spread the song. The new arrangements have a youthful modernity but the national spirit and traditional values are not lost. That is the success of the artists,” said musician Giang Son.
Musician Giang Son also added that the success of these performances is also to spread the love of traditional art to young people: "The young generation should also know that traditional music and art of Vietnam are also very good and have many things to explore. By remaking old songs, I think it will help elevate Vietnamese music and can completely reach out to the world."
The love of young audiences for traditional songs through music programs makes us confident in traditional cultural values. The quintessence of national and traditional culture will always be preserved, conserved and promoted through many generations.
