On the morning of July 9, the Hanoi People's Council questioned a group of issues on the implementation of food safety regulations in the city.
Delegate Tran Khanh Hung (Department No. 30) said that according to the report of the City People's Committee, the total amount of controlled meat and poultry supplied to the market is about 550 tons/day, equivalent to 60% of the meat demand of the Hanoi market.
"In addition to the total controlled 60% of the amount of meat and poultry, what is the origin of the remaining 40% of the meat consumption demand of Hanoi people? What is the solution to ensure food safety for this source?" - Delegate Tran Khanh Hung asked.
Responding to this issue, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Dai - Director of the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Environment said that the amount of meat consumed in the city every day is very large.
"Every year, Hanoi consumes more than 550,000 tons of meat of all kinds. The amount of livestock in the city meets about 60%, the rest is imported from other provinces or imported" - Mr. Dai said.
According to Mr. Dai, in addition to the number of people controlled by the city in the regions, 40% of the meat imported from localities is still floating, illegally imported, smuggled, partly in small-scale production facilities.
"We have not really controlled this number well" - Mr. Dai acknowledged.
To gradually control this situation, Mr. Dai proposed solutions.
Accordingly, in 2025, the Department of Agriculture and Environment has been developing a policy to support agricultural development, paying special attention to ensuring food safety and hygiene.
Build institutions and mechanisms to control more closely, punish heavier and strictly those who do not ensure food safety and hygiene. At the same time, strengthen inspection and handling of violations.
Along with that, it is necessary to develop detailed planning for appropriate livestock production development areas. This will help strictly control output and input, especially food safety quality.
