Bringing heritage out of traditional space
Ancient works, artifacts or historical stories will hardly create attraction if they only appear through a few pages of textbooks. In Hue, this approach is gradually changing as heritage values are put on digital platforms and combined with experiential activities.
Instead of just listening to presentations, students can access heritage through images, videos, 3D models and online platforms. This is currently a source of learning materials to supplement the subject and local education in Hue.
Schools also take advantage of websites, fan pages and online platforms to introduce Hue's history and culture, thereby expanding access to heritage outside the classroom and tours.
At relic sites, technology continues to be used to increase interaction. At Hue Citadel, students can participate in experiential programs combining practical and technological visits, including content recreating court spaces, and archaeological exploration in an intuitive form.
Mr. Hoang Viet Trung - Director of Hue Ancient Citadel Relic Preservation Center, the center also implements many digital solutions to serve preservation and introduction of heritage. Some artifacts are identified on a digital platform; many works are digitized; relic sites are integrated with QR codes for visitors to proactively search for information.
Virtual reality technology, 3D models and digital space also help recreate works and landscapes that have changed over time. This is a point that traditional learning is difficult to fully implement.
When seeing a space that once existed in the past through images or visual models, students can more easily visualize history. From receiving one-way knowledge, they have more opportunities to observe, interact and explore for themselves.
Mr. Nguyen Tan - Director of Hue City Department of Education and Training - said that technology should only be seen as a supporting tool, and cannot replace direct heritage experience.
According to Mr. Tan, for students in difficult areas, digital platforms help shorten the distance in accessing heritage. However, to achieve the best educational efficiency, it is necessary to combine the experience at relics with the exploitation of digital learning materials.
Not only digitizing, but also creating experiences
Bringing heritage to the digital environment does not stop at the goal of creating a data warehouse. The problem is how to make those data truly become tools for learning.
According to the orientation of the education sector, Hue can build a common learning system on relics, history, traditional arts and heritage types. From this data source, teachers can design interactive lessons, use 3D images, videos or virtual reality suitable for each level of education.
Educational games, online competitions or digital exhibitions organized by students themselves are also ways to turn learners from receiving objects into participants in heritage preservation and promotion.
Notably, technology can also connect heritage education with other subjects. STEM-oriented projects can use artificial intelligence, 3D models and virtual reality to restore royal architecture, study building structures or learn about traditional techniques.
This approach both creates learning interest and opens up the possibility for students to look at heritage from many perspectives instead of just memorizing timelines or events.
According to Mr. Nguyen Tan, to do that, teachers need to be equipped with both knowledge about heritage and technology application skills. At the same time, there needs to be coordination between the education sector, relic management units and specialized agencies in building and updating data sources.
Hue has a special advantage when possessing a rich and concentrated heritage system. If it effectively combines the original value of heritage and technology, works that are considered "far" from students can become closer in school life.
At that time, technology does not change the value of heritage but opens another door for the younger generation to access, learn and form a sense of preserving the cultural values of their homeland.
