According to Box Office Vietnam on January 1, 2026, leading the box office is the movie "Avatar 3: Fire and Ash" with revenue of more than 6.6 billion VND, attracting 48,191 tickets and being allocated 1,804 screenings. This result shows that the endurance of the Avatar brand is still very large, especially during holidays when audiences prioritize blockbusters, rich in special effects and theatrical experience. Maintaining high screenings helps the film maintain a stable growth rate, despite competition from many other films.
Notably, Vietnamese film "Heaven of Blood" ranked second with revenue of over 3.46 billion VND, reaching 36,195 tickets and 2,798 screenings. This is a figure showing the significant attraction of a work with a topical social theme, reflecting issues close to life. However, the need for a large number of screenings to maintain revenue also partly shows the challenge of Vietnamese films in retaining audiences for a long time, especially when they have to compete directly with international film brands.
In the next group, the movie "Zootopia: Sky Scramble 2" achieved revenue of more than 1.4 billion VND with 12,580 tickets, showing that animated films are still a safe choice for family audiences at the beginning of the year. In the same group, "Tom & Jerry: The Mysterious Board" grossed more than 1.18 billion VND, while "SpongeBob: The Curse of Pirates" achieved more than 105 million VND, reflecting the stable but not too explosive attraction of the children's film genre.
Another noteworthy point is that the movie "Ai thuong ai meen" - representative of Vietnamese films that lean towards family emotions - achieved revenue of more than 1.35 billion VND, surpassing some foreign films released at the same time. This result shows that domestic audiences still pay a certain attention to close stories, reflecting social life, as long as the film touches emotions and has a suitable release strategy.
In the bottom group of the rankings, films such as "House of Two Owners", "Dai ca ha ha ha", "Dinosaur Family: Stuck in Jurassic Age" or "Dai thoai Tay du: Nguyet quang bao hap" recorded quite modest revenue, ranging from more than 100 million to more than 200 million VND. These are mostly works with little advantage in brand, communication or not meeting the tastes of the majority during holidays.
Overall, the box office at the beginning of the year - January 1, 2026 continues to reflect a familiar trend: foreign films, especially blockbusters and animated films, still dominate in terms of revenue and coverage. Vietnamese films, although showing positive signs in some works, still need a longer-term strategy in terms of script, release time and audience reach if they want to compete sustainably in peak seasons.
