“Marching under the military flag” is a documentary produced by People's Army Cinema to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Vietnam People's Army (December 22, 1944 - December 22, 2024).
The Vietnam People's Army has gone through 80 years of building, fighting and growing. The army was born from the people, under the leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam led by President Ho Chi Minh, fighting for the people, marching under the military flag to gain independence, freedom, national unification and firmly protect the Fatherland. That is why the film is called "Marching Under the Military Flag".
The film is divided into 2 episodes, with the filmmakers choosing the layout according to each historical period. Episode 1 "Fighting for Independence" is about the period of resistance against the French and the resistance against the Americans to save the country. Episode 2 "Ready to protect the Fatherland" is about the new period when the army went through two battles at two ends of the country and built up its forces, fulfilling three functions: a fighting army, a working army, and a production labor army.
Talking to reporters, scriptwriter - People's Artist Le Thi shared: "This year marks the 80th anniversary of the formation and development of the army, my honor is that in 2024 I will also turn 80 years old. As a revolutionary soldier who grew up from People's Army Cinema, I want to contribute my efforts to completing this film". The Vietnam People's Army was built, fought and matured under the leadership of the Party, of Ho Chi Minh's ideology and the will "Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom". After 9 years of fighting the French colonialists, 21 years of fighting the American imperialists with hardship and glory, millions of soldiers have fallen. Affirming the contributions of the Vietnam People's Army over 80 years, the filmmakers have chosen the most typical details and events in each period, combined with a concise storytelling style, mainly using images to convey information and the progress of events.
Director Pham Thanh Hung shared with reporters: "Marching under the flag" is a historical film, requiring absolute historical accuracy.
Behind the scenes story
During the process of completing the script and producing the film, the film crew encountered both advantages and difficulties. The favorable factor was the attention of leaders at all levels, the script received attention and comments from many agencies for editing. The script met the requirements for the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Vietnam People's Army, helping the entire army, the entire unit and the public audience have the most objective view of the formation and development process of the Vietnam People's Army over the past 80 years.
In addition to the above advantages, filmmakers also encounter many difficulties from the time of implementation to the time of approval and editing. Director, People's Artist Luu Quy shared: "We have to choose and consider the content before putting it into the film because the duration does not allow. There are locations that our units cannot go to because of limited means of transportation or events that have taken place but the unit cannot record them. The film must have images and sound, however, many documentary scenes have lost images or the sound cannot be heard clearly.
There are scenes that we cannot reconstructed because the documentary requires real people and real things.
