Sharing about his career goals, Tran Thanh said that what he wants most is that each subsequent work must be different, better and loved by the audience more than the previous film. According to him, any number is precious if the film is accepted.
Just need the movie to win, meaning the audience loves me, then I am happy. Conversely, if my movie puts in a lot of effort but the movie is not accepted by the audience, then I will definitely be very sad. So I always try my best to limit that possibility from happening," he said.
Regarding the view that revenue is the most important measure of cinematic success, Tran Thanh believes that this view is not entirely correct. He compares each film to a dish, with delicious dishes but picky eaters.
For example, durian, fermented fish sauce or some kind of cheese - not everyone likes it, but anyone who likes it is very passionate. Cinema is also the same. There are art films, author films or genres that are difficult to access, surely the audience will be less than commercial films," he analyzed.
According to Tran Thanh, if you have chosen to make films in the direction of "fine dining" (artistic film style, picky audience), you cannot expect a large audience like popular entertainment films. That is the natural law of the market. However, the male director admits that he still hopes that each film must at least be profitable.
When a work has words, professionals will have the belief that their direction is right, the effort put in is not in vain, and have the motivation to continue the following projects," he shared. In case the film does not meet expectations, he believes that it is necessary to consider many factors such as the release time, communication strategy, or the storytelling itself is not attractive enough. At that time, the director must review himself first.
Besides the career story, Tran Thanh also talked about exploiting the material of life in creativity. He believes that to tell true stories, filmmakers need to have enough experience or observation.
Speaking about harmful relationships - a topic that often appears in both life and cinema, he said there is no common formula to avoid. According to Tran Thanh, the most important thing is to find someone who is suitable for him.
When you are compatible, everything is naturally pleasant, but if you are not compatible, negative reactions will be revealed. If in a deadlock, you try to think more positively, give in to each other more, it can reduce conflict. But if you meet someone who does not want to negotiate, it is also a matter of luck in life. The important thing is to be alert when choosing a companion," he expressed.
For Tran Thanh, although cinema is always associated with revenue pressure and record expectations, the greatest value of a film lies in the empathy and affection that the audience has for the work.
