Along with Thoai Ngoc Hau (Nguyen Van Thoai, 1761-1829), Tuyen Trung Hau (Nguyen Van Tuyen, 1763-1831) was the one who made great contributions in commanding the digging of Vinh Te canal.
His original surname was Phan, but due to his many contributions, the king granted him the national surname Nguyen. Besides his illustrious military career, he was also known for his role as a land envoy. Notably, he directly participated in commanding the digging of the Vinh Te Canal.
Nearly 91km long, starting from the west bank of Chau Doc River (Chau Doc City, An Giang Province) and connecting directly to Giang Thanh River (Ha Tien City, Kien Giang Province), Vinh Te Canal is a large project with many values in terms of national defense, transportation, trade, irrigation as well as agriculture...
According to the National History Institute of the Nguyen Dynasty, the Vinh Te Canal was started in 1819, but due to many reasons, the canal was dug in 3 phases and completed in 1824. Thus, by 2024, it will be exactly 200 years. In which, Tuyen Trung Hau Nguyen Van Tuyen was present in 2 phases as the commander.
In 1831, while serving as Protector of Cambodia, he passed away at the age of 68. His coffin was buried in his hometown of Tong Son village, My An hamlet, Vinh An district, An Giang province (now My An Hung A commune, Lap Vo district, Dong Thap province).
Tuyen Trung Hau was a famous general of the Nguyen Dynasty who rose very quickly. Starting his military career as a soldier (1788), he successively held many important positions, such as Deputy Guard Captain, Guard Captain, Commander, then Marshal, and at his peak, Acting Governor of Gia Dinh Citadel, concurrently Protector of Cambodia. In which he participated in 2 out of 3 diggings of Vinh Te Canal as a commander.In 1831, while serving as Protector of Cambodia, he passed away at the age of 68. His coffin was buried in Tong Son village, My An hamlet, Vinh An district, An Giang province (now My An Hung A commune, Lap Vo district, Dong Thap province).In 1971, due to the threat of riverbank erosion, his grave was reburied on the left bank of Cai Tau Thuong canal (My An Hung A) until now.The Mausoleum of Marquis Tuyen Trung is located near his family church.The church is modest in scale and simple in design, but clearly shows the majesty of the famous general who made many contributions during his lifetime.Visiting the tomb and church of Tuyen Trung Hau, we not only have the opportunity to express our gratitude to our ancestors who opened up the country, but also have the opportunity to experience many historical images. In the photo is a series of photos of the process of exhuming and reburying the tomb of Tuyen Trung Hau in 1971.The remaining wooden coffin of Lord Tuyen Trung is displayed in a solemn position in the church.Inside there is a corner displaying many royal decrees of the Nguyen Dynasty for him.In particular, there is the Minh Mang edict of the 11th year, which proclaimed his position as "Commander-in-Chief of the Cambodian Protectorate, Commander of Chau Doc garrison, and concurrently in charge of Ha Tien Tran border affairs". This edict was transcribed and translated by Ms. Vo Thi Dinh, born in 1920, currently living in good health in Binh Thanh Trung commune (Lap Vo, Dong Thap) in 1972.Also on the occasion of translating the edict of King Minh Mang given to Lord Tuyen Trung Hau, Mrs. Vo Thi Dinh was inspired to compose a poem in the form of seven-word eight-line verse, honoring his merits.When she learned that the 200th anniversary of the completion of the Vinh Te Canal was approaching, Mrs. Dinh asked her children and grandchildren to print an old poem and give it to the temple of Lord Tuyen Trung Hau. The poem has a passage: “The name of Cuu Cong will forever remain; His name will be engraved on a bronze stele for a thousand years... The ancestors' mirror will forever be hung; Future generations will look at him and continue his will.”
