Former Director of Vietnam Drama Theater Hoc Phi named a new street in Hanoi

With his contributions, writer and playwright Hoc Phi - who was once the Director of the Vietnam Drama Theater - was named for the new street in Hanoi.

The Hanoi People's Council has passed a Resolution on naming and adjusting the length of a number of streets, streets, and public works in Hanoi in 2025.

Accordingly, Hanoi will have 38 new routes, including Hoc Phi street in Yen Hoa ward.

The above street extends from the intersection between Vu Pham Ham Street (house number 02) to the intersection with Xuan Quynh Street (house number 16). Hoc Phi Street is named after writer, playwright, revolutionary Hoc Phi.

According to information from the Vietnam Literature Museum, writer Hoc Phi's real name is Chu Van Tap, pen name Tu Van. He was born on February 11, 2013 in Tam Nong, Tien Lu, Hung Yen. Writer Hoc Phi passed away on May 6, 2014, at the age of 101.

Writer Hoc Phi participated in the revolution since 1928. Just one year later, he was imprisoned in Hung Yen for patrolling activities against France under the teachings of patriot Nguyen Thai Hoc. In 1930 he was released from prison and voluntarily switched to covert activities for the Party.

In 1932, writer Hoc Phi became a member of the Indochinese Communist Party, at the time only 20 years old. In 1934, he was imprisoned for the second time in Hoa Lo and turned it into a school, opening communist training classes. In September 1936, writer Hoc Phi was pardoned and released from prison but was imprisoned in his hometown.

During the during of 1939. 1939, writer Hoc Phi was active, calling on poor workers to fight. He is both revolutionary and a hired servant, bringing readers many publications published in the weekly imprint of the Fifth novel.

Also during this time, writer Hoc Phi had his first draft "Two Reverse Waves" published in the young English newspaper (first volume), then re-posted in the Fifth novel weekly. At the end of 1939, he was imprisoned for the third time for writing a complaint against the official who robbed a farmer's land in Hung Yen.

Information from the National Museum of History said that 1943- was a joyful spring for writer Hoc Phi. According to comrade Hoang Quoc Viet's instructions, he went to Hanoi to meet artists and was assigned the task of establishing a cultural organization to save the country.

In August 1945, writer Hoc Phi was elected Chairman of the Provisional Revolutionary Committee of Hung Yen province. In 1946 he worked as Deputy Director of the Ministry of Information and Communications.

In the next phase, revolutionary Hoc Phi became General Secretary of the Cultural Resistance of Inter-zone III, then transferred to the Central Propaganda Department, Politburo member of the Central People's Artist Youth Union.

After a period of peace, writer Hoc Phi returned to Hanoi to work as Director of the Vietnam Drama Theater.

Talking to Lao Dong reporter, a representative of Vietnam National Drama Theatre said that the theater was very happy to receive the information that playwright Hoc Phi's name was given to the new street.

However, the theater no longer has many documents and photos of him. I just know that he has made many contributions to the stage and drama when taking on the position of Director. playwright Hoc Phi has many famous plays such as: Dao Nuong, Chi Hoa, Mot Phat Dang, Ben Duong Doi...

From 1957 - 1983, he took on the role of General Secretary of the Vietnam Stage Artists Association, 1st course. He was awarded the First Class Independence Medal and the Ho Chi Minh Prize for Literature and Arts by the Party and State.

During his years of working, writer Hoc Phi used his pen to fight for the revolutionary cause of national liberation.
