The play "The Emperor of the Reed Flag" by author Nguyen Dang Chuong (directed by People's Artist Hoang Tuan) tells the story of the first emperor of Dai Co Viet - Dinh Tien Hoang.
Since he was a buffalo herder, Dinh Bo Linh was unusually intelligent and quick-witted. During buffalo herding sessions, Dinh Bo Linh often thought of mock battle games, using the buffalo's back as a throne, reeds as battle flags, and dividing the herders into two groups to "go to war".
From the script by Dr. Nguyen Dang Chuong, Meritorious Artist Dang Tien skillfully and subtly adapted the puppetry script, especially the period when King Dinh Tien Hoang was still the buffalo boy Dinh Bo Linh.
Artists Xuan Long and Dat Phu spent a lot of time researching history and scripts to create puppet characters that are both familiar and new, and true to the audience's imagination.
The show promises to be attractive not only because of its good script, impressive music, art, and eye-catching puppetry, but also because of the performances of talented artists such as: Le Van, Dang Nhan, Binh Minh (as Dinh Bo Linh), Thu Giang, Phuong Linh (as Dam Thi), Van Phuc, Siu Anh Son (as Dinh Thuc Du), ... and the cast of troupe 2 of Thang Long Puppetry Theater.
Meritorious Artist Thanh Hien - Director of the Theater, artistic director of the play - said: "We have invested very carefully in all stages of this play. The Theater's Board of Directors has carefully selected from the script, director, actors to stages such as sound, lighting, art, puppetry... all are carried out meticulously, carefully, responsibly and wholeheartedly.
As a historical play, it is necessary to be careful and precise in every detail. The entire crew was determined when performing this play with the desire to bring the capital audience, especially children and foreign audiences, new and accurate perspectives on history.
Through the performing language of puppetry, the artists not only bring viewers moments of relaxation and entertainment but also convey messages about the history of building and defending the country of our ancestors. Besides, it is to preserve and promote traditional cultural and artistic values that contribute to the Vietnamese identity.
The puppet show “The Emperor of the Reed Flag” will officially open on the evening of November 5 at the Thang Long Imperial Citadel Water Puppet Theater. This is also the theater’s competition night within the framework of the 2024 Capital Theater Festival.
