The German government is considering plans to buy 15 more F-35 fighter jets, a US-developed stealth fighter. If approved, the total number of F-35s the country owns could increase to 50.
Germany has previously ordered 35 F-35s to replace the tornado squadron, a multi-purpose aircraft that has played a key role in the air force with the ability to carry out attack, reconnaissance and nuclear weapons according to NATO standards.
The expansion of the F-35 is seen as an effort to enhance Germany's defense capabilities while meeting the common goals of the NATO bloc.
Previously, the project to develop fighter jets between Germany, France and Spain called the Future Air Combat Area System (FCAS) was being delayed. The main reason is believed to be disagreements between the parties on work division and technology ownership. Some proposed adjustments in the role of participating countries affected the initial agreement and delayed the project implementation progress.
The German Chancellor said that the parties will continue to discuss to narrow the gap in the project.
As for the plan to buy more F-35, he said that this is a plan that has been considered in advance, but the specific quantity can be adjusted depending on the new targets that NATO is setting.
The German Defense Ministry has not yet commented on the plan and said it will announce the official announcement after it is approved by the National Assembly.
