The Can Tho City Library project has a total investment of nearly 150 billion VND, started at the end of February 2025, but after more than a year of implementation, it is still facing many difficulties, including not being able to handle 14 green trees located within the project premises.

According to the Can Tho City Traffic and Agricultural Construction Investment Project Management Board, the project is built at land plot No. 1 Phan Dinh Phung street, Ninh Kieu ward, with an area of more than 2,424m2, expected to be completed in February 2027. However, so far, the construction value has only reached about 6% of the contract, and the acceptance value has reached 4.5%.
One of the main reasons is the obstacle of 14 ancient trees located along Phan Dinh Phung and Ngo Gia Tu streets. These trees have a large diameter, are decades old, and are located right at the pile driving position, so the foundation construction cannot be deployed yet. According to the plan of specialized agencies, all the trees will be relocated instead of being cut down.
However, the relocation cannot be carried out due to the lack of suitable transportation roads. It is expected that by March 2026, the road serving the relocation of new green trees will be completed, causing site clearance work to continue to be prolonged.

Mr. Nguyen Van Tinh - Project Commander said that the green trees are directly entangled in the pile pressing position, so the construction unit has not been able to deploy the necessary items. After more than a year of construction, the green tree ground has not been completely treated, greatly affecting the overall progress of the project.
During the construction process, the unit also discovered many underground items not in the initial design documents such as old reinforced concrete foundations, stone walls, old piles and underground water tanks. These items must be dismantled before pile pressing, causing additional time and affecting progress.
In addition, the transportation of materials is difficult because the project is located in the central area, only allowed to be carried out at night to ensure traffic safety, causing the construction process to be interrupted.
According to the design, the project includes 1 basement, 1 technical floor and 6 above-ground floors, with a total floor area of about 8,647m2, with a capacity of about 800 people. While waiting for completion, the library is currently temporarily operating at another location in Ninh Kieu ward. Top of Form
