Expanding Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh Expressway to 8 - 10 lanes
Ho Chi Minh City has recently allocated nearly VND1,000 billion to expand the more than 3km long approach road of the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway (from An Phu intersection to Ring Road 2, Thu Duc City), from 4 to 8 lanes. The project will also synchronously expand the two Muong Kenh bridges and Do Xuan Hop overpass.
The project implementation is considered favorable due to little site clearance required, expected to start in 2025 and be completed in 2026.
In addition, Vietnam Expressway Corporation (VEC) was assigned to invest in expanding the section from Ring Road 2 to Ring Road 3 to 8 lanes.
The section from Ring Road 3 to Bien Hoa - Vung Tau Expressway will also be expanded to 10 lanes.
Long Thanh Bridge will be expanded with a new span, increasing its size to 10 lanes (no emergency lanes for now). The total investment for these expansion projects is nearly VND15,000 billion, expected to be completed by the end of 2027.
The 55km-long Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway, with an initial scale of 4 lanes and 2 emergency lanes, has been in operation since 2016.
However, traffic volume on the route has exceeded its capacity, with forecasts that by 2025, traffic volume will exceed 25% of its current size.
Expanding the Ho Chi Minh City - Trung Luong - My Thuan expressway axis
Project Management Board 7 (Ministry of Transport) has sent an official dispatch to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee to seek opinions on completing the pre-feasibility study report on the expansion of the two expressways Ho Chi Minh City - Trung Luong and Trung Luong - My Thuan.
This project was proposed by a consortium of investors including Deo Ca Group Joint Stock Company, Ho Chi Minh City Infrastructure Investment Joint Stock Company (CII) and Tasco Joint Stock Company to be implemented under the BOT (build - operate - transfer) form, with a total investment of nearly VND32,300 billion.
This expressway axis will be expanded over a total length of 91km, starting from Cho Dem intersection (HCMC) and ending at An Thai Trung intersection (Tien Giang).
The Ho Chi Minh City - Trung Luong Expressway is expected to be upgraded to 8 lanes with 2 emergency lanes. The Trung Luong - My Thuan Expressway will be expanded to 6 lanes, with 2 emergency lanes.
Intersections, bridges, culverts, smart traffic systems and toll collection will also be invested synchronously, ensuring safety and operational efficiency. This project is expected to be implemented from 2024 to 2028, with an expected toll collection payback period of 17 years.
The Ho Chi Minh City - Trung Luong Expressway, with four lanes and two emergency lanes, has been in operation for 14 years. However, since toll collection stopped in 2019, the number of cars has increased dramatically, causing frequent congestion and accidents.
Although the Trung Luong - My Thuan Expressway was only put into operation 2 years ago with 4 lanes, it lacks an emergency lane, causing many limitations in operation and has recorded many accidents.
To synchronize with this expressway, Ho Chi Minh City will expand two more routes, Binh Thuan - Cho Dem, 9.5km long, and Tan Tao - Cho Dem, 3.7km long, to accommodate 6 motor vehicle lanes and 2 mixed lanes.
Three overpasses at Tran Dai Nghia, Tran Van Giau and Bui Thanh Khiet streets will also be built.
Total investment is about 2,350 billion VND from the state budget, expected to be implemented in the 2024 - 2028 period.
