On the morning of September 27, at the 18th session of the 10th term Ho Chi Minh City People's Council, the city approved the investment policy for the project to expand the road leading to the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway (from An Phu intersection to Ring Road 2).
This 3km long road will be expanded from 4 to 8 lanes, including the expansion of Muong Kenh bridge and Do Xuan Hop overpass. With the advantage of almost no land clearance because it has been done before, this project has a total investment of nearly 1,000 billion VND from the Ho Chi Minh City budget.
The project is scheduled to start construction in 2025 and be completed within a year. When completed, it will be synchronized with the An Phu intersection, which is currently under construction with a three-story scale and is expected to be operational by the end of 2025.
The 55km-long, 4-lane Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway has been in operation since 2016 with a total investment of over VND20,600 billion. This is a vital traffic route connecting Ho Chi Minh City with the Southeast region, making an important contribution to the socio-economic development of the region.
According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport, since its inauguration, traffic volume on the expressway has been steadily increasing, with an average increase of 11.12% per year. In particular, the section from Ho Chi Minh City to Long Thanh is forecasted to have about 72,254 vehicles per day and night by 2025, exceeding the capacity of the existing 4-lane scale by 25%.
In this situation, the expansion of the expressway from Ho Chi Minh City to Long Thanh, including the road leading from An Phu intersection to Ring Road 2, is very necessary and urgent to solve the increasing traffic pressure.
Not only stopping at expanding the access road, the Committee for State Capital Management at Enterprises has proposed that the Government assign the Vietnam Expressway Corporation (VEC) to continue investing in expanding the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh Expressway.
The section from the Ring Road 2 intersection (Thu Duc City) to Ring Road 3 will be expanded to 8 lanes according to the plan.
In particular, the section from the Ring Road 3 intersection to Bien Hoa - Vung Tau expressway will be invested with 10 lanes.
Long Thanh Bridge will also be built with a new bridge unit, with a scale similar to the current bridge, serving 10-lane traffic (temporarily without emergency lane).
The total investment for this expansion project is nearly 15,000 billion VND, expected to be completed by the end of 2027 if approved.
