Due to traffic disruption, when receiving news of flash floods in Nam Luc commune, Bac Ha district, Lao Cai province, authorities were unable to mobilize equipment and machinery to rescue victims in Nam Tong village.
Rescue teams had to walk through the forest for more than 3 hours to reach the landslide site. Currently, about 250 officers and soldiers have transported food, provisions, and medical supplies to people in isolated areas.
Mr. Ly Sau Di said that such a serious landslide had never happened before, and the people of Nam Tong village could not imagine it.
At around 12 noon on June 10, suddenly a loud "bang" was heard, then a torrent of water and rocks rolled down, burying nearly ten houses.
Mr. Di's mother, wife and children, and his uncle's cousin and his wife were buried, and their bodies have not been found yet.
In the same situation, Mr. Mi Seo De - the village security guard and 5 members of his family including his mother, wife and 3 children were buried. Only the 2 grandfather and grandson who went to the fields were lucky to escape.
According to Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Duc Cuong - Deputy Head of Bac Ha District Police, the search for victims encountered many difficulties due to the large amount of landslide soil and rocks.
This was the first time in many years of rescue that Lieutenant Colonel Cuong had witnessed such a terrible landslide. The entire hill collapsed, creating a wave of earth, pushing houses 1 km away. The soil, rocks, and mud were 3-4 m thick, making digging very difficult when searching.
In addition, the communication signal has not been restored, which greatly affects the quick reporting of information in search and rescue work. To report to the district and province, the forces must find high places to detect the signal to transmit information.
So far, authorities have found 24 bodies and are speeding up the search for 14 missing people in Nam Luc.
The search method has now been changed, the rescue team is using pumps to flush away the water to make the search easier. In the next 1-2 days, when the excavator reaches the scene, the forces will try to find the bodies as quickly as possible so that the families can bury them.
According to statistics from the Office of the Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention, Control and Search and Rescue of Lao Cai province, as of the morning of September 15, floods have killed 118 people, left 50 missing and caused 13,547 houses to be flooded, eroded and swept away.
