After many days of being soaked in mud, on September 14, 650 people from Military Region 2, police, border guards, and local forces continued to bask in the sun and spread out in many directions to search for missing victims.
Currently, officers, soldiers and people are concentrated in the upstream and downstream areas of the landslide and in deep swamps. The hot sun has exhausted the forces and worn them down.
In addition, mobile forces along both sides of Voi Mountain combined flycams and sniffer dogs to assist in the search.
Hoang Van Tien - the lucky survivor - said: On the morning of September 10, he woke up early to call his wife and children to watch the floodwaters at Ech bridge not far from his house. Seeing the slope of his father's house not far away had collapsed, Tien called his younger brother Hoang Van Duan to go check it out.
On the way home from his father's house, Mr. Tien heard a loud explosion, looked up and observed towards Voi mountain and saw water and soil shooting 200 - 300m into the air.
“The two of us were shocked and shouted, ‘The whole village has collapsed, everyone is dead.’ About 3 minutes later, we ran from the bridge to the top of the slope. The landslide did not happen slowly, but after just one explosion, the whole village was completely flattened,” Mr. Tien recalled.
Meanwhile, Mr. Duan said: After the terrible flash flood, everyone in the village thought his family was dead. A few days before they went to stay with someone else, there was no means of communication so people could not notify the authorities.
"I just hope that there will be more miracles coming to Lang Nu, as lucky as my brothers and I," said Mr. Duan.
With 11 people who were missing found and returned - the number of people safe after the flash flood that buried the entire Lang Nu village has increased to 57. Currently, 33 people are still missing, 51 bodies have been found.
According to information from the Lao Cai Provincial People's Committee, as of the afternoon of September 14, the entire Lao Cai province had 256 people dead, missing and injured due to floods; 13,302 houses were flooded, landslides, and swept away by floods; more than 5,000 hectares of rice, crops and plants were damaged; many national highways, provincial roads, and state works were seriously eroded and damaged.
