On September 16, at the press conference of An Giang province, the Department of Agriculture and Environment (NNMT) of the province said that from the beginning of 2026 to now, 35 landslides, cracks, and subsidence of riverbanks, canals, and ditches have occurred in the province, with a length of 1,700m, affecting 45 houses that need to be relocated. Among them, 8 houses completely collapsed into riverbanks, canals, and ditches and 5 partially collapsed.
According to the results of monitoring and warning of riverbank landslides in An Giang province in Report No. 33 dated March 12, 2025 of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, the total number of warning river sections is 56 sections, with a total length of 181,450m (Tien River: 12 sections, with a length of 49,100 m; Hau River: 29 sections, with a total length of 84,050 m; Vam Nao River: 1 section, with a length of 6,000 m; Binh Di River: 1 section with a length of 9,100 m; Chau Doc River: 3 sections, with a length of 6,400 m; Tan An Fertilizer Canal: 4 sections, with a length of 14,400 m; Ong Chuong Canal: 5 sections, with a length of 10,100 m; Cai San Canal: 1 section, with a length of 2,300 m). Among them: there are 4 sections warned at a particularly dangerous level (Hau River, Vam Nao River: from Kien An - My Hoi Dong 6,000m long; Tan An Fertilizer Canal: Tan An commune
There are 3 sections warned at dangerous and especially dangerous levels (Hau River: Chau Phong, 6,900m long; Hau River: Phu Hiep - Hoa Lac - Phu Binh, 13,200m long; Hau River: Binh Duc - Binh Khanh - My Binh, 5,000m long). There are 49 sections at dangerous levels.
Mr. Luong Huy Khanh, Acting Head of the Sub-Department of Irrigation, Department of Agriculture and Environment of An Giang province, said that to proactively prevent and respond to landslides, the Department of Agriculture and Environment has coordinated with the People's Committees of relevant departments, branches and localities to advise the Provincial People's Committee to implement many solutions.
Advise the Provincial People's Committee to issue a Directive on strengthening the prevention and control of subsidence, landslides, flooding, drought, and saltwater intrusion in An Giang province. In which, assign tasks to departments, branches, and localities to strictly manage housing construction activities, works and activities that are at risk of increasing subsidence and landslides; proactively review, arrange, and relocate residents along rivers, canals, and areas at high risk of subsidence and landslides to safe places.
Based on the results of monitoring and warning of landslides in 56 sections on rivers and canals by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Environment, the People's Committees of communes, wards, and special zones have deployed propaganda work to let people know to proactively implement prevention and avoidance measures.
The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (Irrigation Sub-Department) has also coordinated with 8 communes and wards to inspect and support the handling of construction violations within the scope of irrigation works and canals. In addition, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development together with the Department of Finance, Department of Construction, Provincial Project Management Board and related sectors have organized 2 surveys in 12 localities and advised the Provincial People's Committee to organize a working group to survey landslides in 6 localities. Through this, localities have also been supported with solutions to respond to and overcome landslides according to the "4 on-site" motto.
For large-scale landslide areas on main rivers, according to the long-term orientation to protect infrastructure, important works and residents, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development is coordinating with the Department of Finance, the Provincial Project Management Board and localities to complete reports and proposals to advise the Provincial People's Committee to submit to the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment for synthesis and consideration of submitting to the Government for support to An Giang province from central budget capital to prioritize the implementation of 18 riverbank landslide embankment projects, with a total capital of nearly 7,000 billion VND.
