On July 8, at the periodic press conference of An Giang province, the Provincial Department of Agriculture and Environment said that from the beginning of 2026 to now, the natural disaster situation has been complicated under the impact of extreme weather.
Natural disasters have caused 2 deaths and 1 injury due to lightning strikes. The whole province experienced 33 cases of rain, thunderstorms accompanied by tornadoes, collapsing 10 houses, blowing off roofs of 108 houses, burning 1 house; blowing off roofs of 1 fish farming raft; collapsing 5.4 hectares of fruit trees, flooding and collapsing 2.96 hectares of crops and other architectural structures. Estimated damage value is about 5.62 billion VND.
Regarding riverbank, canal, and ditch landslides, from the beginning of 2026 to now, there have been 30 landslides, cracks, and subsidence, with a length of about 1.5 km, affecting 27 houses that need to be relocated to safe places. Estimated damage value is about 1.99 billion VND.
Mr. Nguyen Duc Duy - Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of An Giang province - said that the Department has submitted to the Provincial People's Committee for promulgation over 20 documents directing the work of disaster prevention and control and response to dangerous weather to ensure agricultural production and people's livelihoods in the province.
Immediately after the natural disaster occurred, the Provincial People's Committee directed departments, branches and localities to urgently implement response measures, mobilize forces according to the "four on-the-spot" motto, organize rescue and relief, visit and support affected households; and at the same time relocate people and property out of dangerous areas.

In addition, in order to promptly support people to stabilize their lives, the Department has advised the Provincial People's Committee to issue a decision approving financial support for households to overcome the consequences of damage caused by natural disasters in communes, wards, and special zones in 2025-2026, with a total budget of about 3.9 billion VND.
To date, the province has invested in handling about 90.41/424 km of riverbanks, canals, and ditches that have been eroded or are at risk of erosion, and at the same time continues to review and prioritize allocating resources to invest in handling the remaining areas in order of urgency, in order to gradually complete the system of landslide prevention and control works in the province, contributing to protecting the safety of residential areas, infrastructure works, stabilizing production and people's lives.
Mr. Duy also said that the Department is currently advising the Provincial People's Committee to develop key plans and options for response. The above options are expected to be submitted to the Provincial People's Committee for promulgation in the third quarter of 2026. In the long term, the Department is proactively coordinating with sectors and localities to advise the Provincial People's Committee to develop the Plan for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control for the period 2026-2030, as a basis for departments, sectors and localities to organize the synchronous implementation of natural disaster prevention, response and recovery solutions.
