The Bac Ha hydropower plant is the second largest hydropower project in the new Lao Cai province, after Thac Ba Hydropower Plant, the old Yen Bai province (120 MW).
The project not only plays a role in providing electricity but also carries a particularly important responsibility in ensuring the safety of dams, regulating water resources and protecting the ecological environment of downstream areas.
Through research, the Bac Ha Hydropower Plant was built on the Chay River, invested with a capital of over VND 2,300 billion, including 2 generators with a total capacity of 90MW.
The No. 1 unit was put into operation and connected to the national grid from June 2012, and in September 2012, the No. 2 unit was also completed and connected to the commercial power generation grid.

In addition to providing a clean and stable source of electricity for the national grid, the unit is also a fulcrum for socio-economic development for many localities in the Northwest region.
In mid-September, present at this large hydropower project, Lao Dong Newspaper reporters recorded the majestic image of the factory on the lush green Chay River.
Mr. Nguyen Van Tinh - Deputy General Director of Bac Ha Hydropower Joint Stock Company - said: "Storm Yagi in 2024 caused many hydropower plants in Lao Cai province to stop operating, but at Bac Ha Hydropower Plant, all plant activities still take place continuously. Along with keeping the plants in stable operation, the work of ensuring safety for workers is also given great attention".

Information from Bac Ha Hydropower Joint Stock Company, in 2025, the unit plans to produce more than 309 million kWh.
Currently, the water level of Bac Ha hydroelectric reservoir in the upstream reaches 180m, while in the downstream is 123.9m.
