Currently, durian in some localities in Da Huoai district (Lam Dong) is entering its second flowering and bulging period. This is the most important stage, deciding more than 50% of the total yield.
However, unseasonal rain suddenly appeared when durian was rooting, stimulating the growth of the tree tops, causing the flowers to discolor and fall off in large numbers.
Mr. Nguyen Minh Hong Diep's family (village 2, Ha Lam commune) grows more than 24 hectares of durian. According to him, prolonged rain for many days caused serious damage to durian flowers, causing full roots to fall, threatening productivity.
Similarly, Mr. Dang Huy Bo (Ha Lam commune) has 2.2 hectares of durian, of which 20% of the second crop has been completely lost due to rain. He is worried because the remaining area will be pests in the next 4-5 days, while the weather is still complicated.
Mr. Phan Quang Thuc - Chairman of Ha Lam Commune People's Committee - said that unseasonal rains have seriously affected the flowering and bearing process of durian. The whole commune currently has more than 1,800 hectares of durian in the business phase.
Preliminary statistics show that during the second fruit growing period, about 50% of the durian area in Ha Lam commune had discoloration and flowering.
In this situation, the People's Committee of the commune is coordinating with the agricultural sector of Da Huoai district to instruct farmers to brace to ensure that the plants have enough nutrients to eat fruit in the next flowering period.
Not only Ha Lam commune, unseasonal rains also caused damage in two other localities with large durian areas in Da Huoai district.
Accordingly, about 30% of the durian area in Da P'Loa commune and 40% in Da M'ri town were affected.
