According to initial information, at around 9:50 p.m. on February 24, Nghi Son Port Border Guard Station received a report from Nam Phat 8 ship, captained by Le Van Vinh (born in 1984, from Vinh Bao, Hai Phong) informing that while the ship was traveling from Vung Tau port to Hai Phong, carrying 6,900 tons of iron, at coordinates 19°33'03"N - 105°58'27"E (me island about 12 nautical miles to the Southeast), the ship's cabin suddenly collapsed and caught fire.
