Hanoi is accelerating the progress of local flood control projects on many inner city streets, with the goal of completion in June 2026 to improve drainage capacity and minimize the risk of flooding in this rainy season.

In recent years, the flooding situation in the Capital has become increasingly complicated. In particular, the heavy rain in September 2025 has caused hundreds of flooding points to appear, many streets fall into congestion, seriously affecting people's lives and travel.
According to specialized agencies, the main reason is that extreme weather phenomena are increasing, rapid urbanization reduces natural water seepage, while drainage infrastructure has not been synchronously invested.

Mr. Nguyen Duc Hung - Director of Hanoi City Technical Infrastructure Management Center (Hanoi Department of Construction) - said that the City Party Committee and Hanoi City People's Committee have identified urban flooding as one of the five major "bottlenecks" that need to be focused on solving with synchronous solutions in the short and long term.
The flood control project is implemented from March 2026, including 22 items, including renovating pumping stations at 6 large lakes and building drainage systems at 16 locations on central streets such as Ly Thai To, Phan Chu Trinh, Quang Trung, Nguyen Trai...

According to the initial plan, the construction time was 5 months. However, to promptly put the project into operation before the rainy season, the city requested to shorten the progress to 90 days.
In order to limit the impact on urban traffic, most items are deployed at night, from 10 pm to 5 am the next morning. However, the construction process faces many difficulties due to dense underground technical infrastructure, cramped ground and lack of material gathering space.
After each working shift, construction units must restore the road surface and clean the site to ensure people can travel conveniently during the day.
During the implementation process, the project was also repeatedly affected by unfavorable weather, socio-political events and foreign affairs activities taking place in the area. At times, the construction site had to temporarily stop construction to serve the work of ensuring security, order and traffic.
To compensate for the progress, from the end of May 2026, many construction sites have adjusted their implementation plans. On Quang Trung street, units are allowed to construct day and night, and at the same time increase the number of construction teams from 4 to 10. On average, about 60m of the sewer line is completed each day.
By the end of May 2026, some sections of the route have completed the restoration of the road surface. It is expected that the rough asphalt concrete layer will be completed by June 5 and the entire road surface will be completed before June 15.
On Ly Thai To, Le Phung Hieu, Phan Chu Trinh, Quan Su streets..., the installation of culverts has basically been completed, barriers have been removed, and only some auxiliary items are continuing to be completed.
Representatives of the investor said that contractors are mobilizing maximum manpower and equipment, organizing continuous construction to ensure the set progress, while minimizing the impact on people's lives and travel activities.
The project also received close direction from the city and the coordination of departments, branches and local authorities. Many opinions contributed by people during the implementation process have been received to adjust the construction plan accordingly.
The completion of the project on schedule is expected to contribute to improving drainage capacity and significantly reducing localized flooding in the inner city of Hanoi in the 2026 rainy season.
