Two days of being submerged in floodwaters caused severe damage to Thuan Hoa Primary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities. Floodwaters rose rapidly, submerging many facilities and school equipment.
Mr. Vu Khac Lan - Principal of Thuan Hoa Primary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities B recalled that on the evening of September 30, when realizing the complicated flood situation, the school decided to let 217 boarding students return home to avoid the flood.


"The flood situation was so fast, on the evening of September 30, teachers were up all night to clean up. In the early morning of October 1, floodwaters began to rise into the school. Teachers had to evacuate to a hill 500m from the school to ensure safety.
The water level rose unprecedentedly, having to be flooded more than 4 meters. After 2 days of being submerged in water, the school caused serious damage," said Mr. Lan.
According to Mr. Lan, after the water receded, teachers and authorities started cleaning up. Estimated damage is nearly 2 billion VND. The mud submerged everything, making everyone feel sorry. Up to now, the workload has been cleaned and repaired by about 80%.
The school is trying to help students return to school next Wednesday. However, there will be another storm No. 11, so we are quite worried.
According to information from the Department of Education and Training of Tuyen Quang, the recent flood affected more than 45 schools. The total damage is about 10.5 billion VND. The number of schools that have to let students stay home from school is 462 schools, 212,763 students have to stay home from school.
Schools that suffered minor damage have proactively overcome the consequences and soon stabilized their organization. 14 schools that suffered great damage (total damage of over 100 million/school) are expected to request the province to consider supporting the repair in the coming time.
It is expected that on October 6, most schools will organize students to return to normal schooling (except in cases of force majeure.


On October 5, speaking with a reporter from Lao Dong Newspaper, Mr. Bui Quang Tri - Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Tuyen Quang province said that the flooded schools were mainly in the city and some neighboring areas.
Up to now, when the water recedes, schools are overcoming the consequences. In addition to cleaning up mud and disinfecting, they also bought necessary equipment and tables and chairs.
"Depending on the conditions and impact of each school, the owner will take remedial measures. After the repair is completed, the school will notify the students to return to school.

Of which, 42 houses were completely damaged; nearly 900 houses were damaged from 30 - 70%. This is the largest number of natural disaster damages in history.
Floods also caused over 120 schools, cultural houses, and health stations to be damaged and destroyed; 11,000 hectares of rice, corn, vegetables, and industrial crops were buried and broken; 28 bridges were broken and subsided; 70 irrigation works and clean water were destroyed. In addition, many electric poles, transformer stations, and rural markets were damaged.
On October 2, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Tuyen Quang sent a report to the Provincial People's Committee, requesting the Prime Minister and central ministries and branches to consider supporting 1,000 billion VND to urgently overcome the serious damage caused by the circulation of storm No. 10 (Bualoi).
