While hundreds of millions of Chinese people are enjoying an 8-day National Day holiday, Typhoon No. 11 Matmo made landfall on the east coast of Guangdong province at 1:50 p.m. on October 5, with gusts of up to 151 km/h and heavy rain.
The Quang Dong government has issued a red alert - the highest on the four-level storm warning scale - and evacuated more than 151,000 people from coastal areas before the storm hit. Some expressways inam Giang city have been blocked, ferries connecting to Hong Kong (China) and Hainan Island have temporarily stopped operating.
On Hainan Island, a major Chinese tourist center, schools have been temporarily closed, many resorts have stopped receiving visitors. About 60 flights to and from Hai Khau International Airport were canceled on October 5.
Meanwhile, in the Guangxi Autonomous Region, the government has closed many tourist attractions and evacuated tens of thousands of tourists to prevent floods.
According to the storm forecast of the Vietnam National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, at 1:00 p.m. on October 5, the center of storm No. 11 was about 290km east-southeast of Mong Cai (Quang Ninh). The storm is moving in a West-Northwest direction at a speed of 20-25km/h.
It is forecasted that by 1:00 a.m. on October 6, the storm center in the coastal areas of Quang Ninh (Vietnam) and Guangxi (China) will decrease to level 10, gusting to level 13. The storm is moving in a West-Northwest direction at 20-25km/h.

At 1:00 p.m. on October 6, the storm center in the northern mountainous area decreased to level 6, gusting to level 8, moving in the West Northwest direction, about 20km/h.
At 1:00 a.m. on October 7, the center of the storm was at 22.7 degrees North latitude, 104.2 degrees East longitude; in the mountainous areas of the Northwest, weakening into a low pressure area, below level 6, moving in the West Northwest direction, about 20km/h.
Forecast of the impact of storm No. 11
From the night of October 5 to noon on October 6, on the mainland of the coastal area from Quang Ninh to Hung Yen and Lang Son province, the wind will gradually increase to level 6-7, near the storm center level 8-10, gusting to level 11-12. The deep inland area of the Northeast will have strong winds of level 4-5, some places will have level 6, gusting to level 7-8.
Communes/wards in the Northeast region of Quang Ninh province are likely to have strong winds of level 9-10, gusting to level 12-13; The remaining communes/wards of Quang Ninh province and the coastal areas of Hai Phong City are likely to have strong winds of level 8-9, gusting to level 10-11; The communes/wards in the coastal areas of Hung Yen province and the northern border communes of Lang Son province are likely to have strong winds of level 6-8, gusting to level 9-10; The northeastern area of Bac Ninh province (old Bac Giang province) and the eastern area of Cao Bang province are likely to have strong winds of level 6-7, gusting to level 8-9.
From the night of October 5 to the end of the night of October 7, in the mountainous and midland areas of the North, there will be heavy rain, with common rainfall from 150-250mm, locally very heavy rain over 400mm. Warning of the risk of heavy rain (over 150 mm/3 hours); the Northern Delta and Thanh Hoa will have moderate rain, heavy rain with common rainfall of 70-150 mm, locally very heavy rain over 200 mm.
Regarding Hanoi weather forecast: Less likely to be affected by storms, beware of thunderstorms, tornadoes and strong gusts of wind. It is forecasted that from early morning of October 6 to the end of October 7, there will be moderate rain, heavy rain, with common rainfall of 70-120mm, locally over 150mm.
