Son La - Many officials in mountainous communes in Son La have to work dozens of kilometers away from home, but have not been provided with public housing or temporary accommodation support.

According to the investigation of Lao Dong Newspaper, most communes and wards in Son La province currently do not have official housing for officials.

After the arrangement of commune-level administrative units, many cadres have to work dozens of kilometers away from houses, especially in mountainous communes with difficult transportation. To facilitate work, many people have to rent a house near their office or temporarily stay in school buildings.

Ms. Lo Thi Ngoc - an office worker in Ngoc Chien commune, said that she previously worked at the old Muong La District Propaganda Department.

After removing the district-level local government and merging communes, Ms. Volong went to Ngoc Chien commune to work. Every day, she has to travel nearly 40km from home to work, while the commune does not have a public housing for the staff.

To facilitate my work, I am currently temporarily staying at the apartment building of Ngoc Chien Primary and Secondary School, and only return home once a weekend.

"I am not married yet, so life here is temporarily stable. However, this is only a temporary solution because schools are on summer vacation, and I will probably have to rent a room in the new school year" - Ms. Ngoc shared.

Talking to reporters of Lao Dong Newspaper, Mr. Nguyen Son Lam - Chairman of Ngoc Chien Commune People's Committee said that the commune currently does not have public housing for officials. Currently, the whole commune has about 30 cadres temporarily staying at the collective houses of schools and health stations in the area or renting accommodation outside.

"I myself am staying at an acquaintance's house to facilitate my work, because my house is 70km from the commune People's Committee headquarters and cannot be visited during the day" - Mr. Lam said.

According to the representative of the Department of Finance of Son La province, there is currently a shortage of public housing for officials in communes and wards in the province.

"In the immediate future, units need to have temporary solutions to improve working conditions, need to optimize existing space to ensure smooth operations. In the long term, the Department has proposed that the Central Government support the construction of public housing for 75 communes and wards in the province" - said a representative of the Department of Finance.

Mr. Dao Tai Tue - Director of the Department of Construction of Son La province said that the Department is advising on the implementation of the construction of prefabricated houses to meet housing needs, helping cadres, civil servants and public employees in the new communes feel secure in their work and complete their assigned tasks well.

"The Construction Department has submitted to the Provincial People's Committee for approval the design plan for the model of the prefabricated public housing and the prefabricated workhouse for implementation according to regulations" - Mr. Tue shared.

The People's Committee of Son La province has also issued a Decision, regulating the cases of people with private houses but far from the workplace who are entitled to social housing support policies in the province.

The People's Committee of Son La province assigned the Department of Construction to perform the function of State management of social housing construction investment projects in the province in accordance with regulations.

At the same time, guide organizations and individuals in the process of determining distance, synthesizing difficulties and problems in applying this regulation in the implementation process, reporting to the Provincial People's Committee for consideration and direction.
