According to statistics from the General Department of Customs, the volume of rice exports in May 2025 is estimated to reach 1.1 million tons with a value of 573.1 million USD, bringing the total volume and export price of rice in the first 5 months of 2025 to 4.5 million tons and 2.34 billion USD.
Notably, exports increased by 12.2% in volume but decreased by 8.9% in value compared to the same period in 2024. The average export price of rice in the first 5 months of 2025 is estimated at 516.4 USD/ton, down 18.7% over the same period in 2024.
Of which, the Philippines is the largest rice consumer market in Vietnam with a market share of 41.4%. The East Sea and China are the next two major markets with 11.9% and 10.3%.

In terms of value, compared to the same period last year, the rice export value in the first 4 months of 2025 to the Philippines market decreased by 21.8%, the Ivory Coast market increased by 2.7 times, the Chinese market increased by 83.7%. In the group of 15 largest export markets, the value of rice exports increased the most in the Bang-Laest market with an increase of 515.6 times and the strongest decreased in the Indonesian market with 97.9%.
Regarding the decrease in rice export prices, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Phung Duc Tien explained that India has opened the export door and some countries have become partially self-sufficient in food.
However, currently Vietnam has 85% of new rice varieties and 89% of high-quality rice varieties, the type of 5% has gone less, so the decrease is not large, in April alone it still reached over 500 USD/ton and is currently over 400 USD/ton while other countries have not reached this figure.
"In that context, the Government has assigned the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment to take steps to prepare. First is rice land planning, currently we have 7.1 million hectares and still ensure the harvest of 35 million tons of rice and export of 5 million tons. This year, exports still increased in output and decreased in value. This is also a new foundation for us to continue building new strategies for rice," said Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien.
In addition, regarding solutions to promote agricultural product consumption in general, the Deputy Minister said that we need to develop domestic and export consumption markets. Continue to handle market issues to facilitate agricultural exports. Monitor and grasp the price situation and supply of essential food items, coordinate with localities to support connections, promote processing and consumption of agricultural products.
