Can Tho considers adding links to logistics corridors

Can Tho - The 80km railway line connects Can Tho Station with Tran De Port, opening up more transportation directions for logistics in the Mekong Delta.

Can Tho City People's Committee proposed that the Ministry of Construction consider and support the addition of a specialized railway line about 80km long, connecting Can Tho Station with Tran De Port area into the Ho Chi Minh City - Can Tho railway project with central budget capital.

According to the adjustment of the Mekong Delta Regional Plan for the period 2021 - 2030, vision to 2050 approved by the Prime Minister in Decision No. 616/QD-TTg dated April 4, 2026, Tran De wharf area (Can Tho) is oriented to develop into a special seaport, taking on the role of gateway port of the Mekong Delta region.

According to seaport planning, Tran De offshore port is located at Tran De estuary, Tran De commune, Can Tho city, with a scale of 2-4 wharves, total length 800-1,600m. The port can receive container ships, total up to 100,000 tons; bulk cargo ships up to 160,000 tons and international passenger ships up to 225,000 GT. Estimated cargo throughput capacity 24.6-32.5 million tons.

According to the Can Tho City Plan for the period 2021 - 2030, vision to 2050, the city continues to orient the development of Tran De Economic Zone with a scale of about 40,000ha, located in Vinh Hai, Lieu Tu, Lich Hoi Thuong, Tran De, Tai Van, Tan Thanh, Dai Ngai, Truong Khanh, Long Phu communes and Khanh Hoa ward.

Tran De Economic Zone is oriented to become a multi-sectoral, multi-field integrated economic zone with synchronous and modern infrastructure; playing a growth-fueled role, leading the development of the Southeast of Can Tho City and the Mekong Delta region, and also a focal point for international maritime trade through Tran De Port.

To effectively exploit this area, the city determines that it needs a multi-modal transportation system including roads, railways, inland waterways and maritime.

Can Tho City Planning continues to update the direction of the Ho Chi Minh City - Can Tho - Ca Mau railway line, orienting Can Tho Station about 60ha, arranging about 50ha for logistics infrastructure and about 1,000ha for urban development associated with stations and railways. At the same time, supplementing the direction of the specialized railway line connecting the Ho Chi Minh City - Can Tho - Ca Mau line to Tran De Port.

Currently, Can Tho City and An Giang province are deploying the Chau Doc - Can Tho - Soc Trang expressway, expected to be completed in 2027. The Ministry of Construction is also studying and preparing to invest in the Ho Chi Minh City - Vinh Long - Can Tho - Ca Mau and Ha Tien - Rach Gia - Bac Lieu expressways.

According to Can Tho, synchronous investment in seaports, railways, highways and inland waterways will form a multimodal transport hub, helping import and export goods of the Mekong Delta reduce transit through Cat Lai and Cai Mep - Thi Vai, shorten time, reduce logistics costs and improve competitiveness.

The Ministry of Construction is preparing a Pre-feasibility Study Report for the Ho Chi Minh City - Can Tho railway project, about 175.2km long, passing through Ho Chi Minh City, Tay Ninh, Dong Thap, Vinh Long and Can Tho; expected to submit to the National Assembly for investment policy approval in 2026.

On that basis, Can Tho City People's Committee proposed to the Ministry of Construction to add a specialized railway line about 80km long, starting point at Can Tho Station, ending point in Tran De Port area, to the Ho Chi Minh City - Can Tho railway project and invested from central budget capital.
