Additional income during the off-season
The Chau Doc - Can Tho - Soc Trang expressway project is a national key project, with a total length of about 188km, passing through the provinces of An Giang and Can Tho. During the construction process, tens of thousands of workers have been mobilized, opening up on-site job opportunities for local people, especially unskilled workers, contributing to improving income and stabilizing life.
jobs that do not require high skills such as leveling, clearing construction sites, transporting materials, tying iron, etc. are prioritized by contractors for on-site recruitment. Each person can receive a salary of 300,000 - 500,000 VND/day, depending on the job taken on.
Mr. Huynh Thanh Doi, residing in Thanh Thoi An commune, Can Tho city, where the expressway passes through, took advantage of his free time to apply to work as a worker. He has been breaking iron and cleaning the bridge for more than half a month now, earning about 300,000 VND per day. "I farm and raise shrimp for more than 5,000 square meters, and my wife takes care of me at home. I work as a worker. The project is close to home so it takes time in the morning and afternoon. To have more income to cover living expenses," said Mr. Nhan.
Mr. Vo Hoang Kham, from Vinh Long province, said that he has just come to construct the overpass No. 27 under package No. 11, component project 4 of Chau Doc - Can Tho - Soc Trang Expressway (abbreviated as component project 4) for more than a week. Here, he participated in stages such as arranging stones, tying iron, and cleaning the bridge surface. The salary he receives is 300,000 VND/day, and the contractor takes care of the meals.
"In my hometown, I work in the fields, and when I am free, I work in construction to earn more income. If you work far away, rent a room near the construction site for convenience. I have been working on the project for more than 10 years, thanks to the highway project that requires a lot of workers, I have regular jobs," Mr. Kham shared.
Similarly, the two brothers Nguyen Minh Tien (from Vinh Long) and his father also applied to work as workers at this expressway project. They do jobs such as plowing rocks and watering asphalt, and their income is about 1 million VND/day. "Having such an income in the countryside is very good. Although the work is hard, we have to wear the sun and rain, but it is stable," said Mr. Tien.
Similarly, at the construction site of bridge No. 22, under package No. 10, component project 4, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy from O Mon ward, Can Tho city, and her son work as iron tiepers and lead breaker. Ms. Thuy said that her family did not have land for production or a stable job, so she and her mother came here to work for a living.
"This job is especially hard in the hot season. When tired, do it again, when healthy, do it again. My mother and I earn about 500,000 VND per day. Thanks to the expressway project here, my family has more income, even though it is a little away from home, it is still easier than before," Ms. Thuy confided.

High demand for labor
Mr. Hoang Ngoc Giang, a site officer of Dat Phuong Group Joint Stock Company, said that at bridges 22 and 29 under package 10, component project 4, the demand for unskilled labor is quite large, especially during the peak period. At times, more than 120 workers were mobilized, of which 27 - 30 were local workers, taking on stages such as casting girders, making pillar bodies, and bridge surfaces. Income is about 450,000 - 500,000 VND/day.
Mr. Giang said that when they start working, workers receive short-term training, creating favorable working conditions. The contractor also regularly reminds workers to comply with labor safety regulations, especially wearing full protective gear.
Mr. Phung Ngoc Manh, representative of Brigade 99, Corps 12 (Truong Son Construction Corporation) said that the unit is undertaking the construction of 3 bridges on the route under package No. 11, component project 4. To ensure progress, all forces are arranged to work according to the "3 shifts 4 teams" plan, not afraid of the sun and rain.
The construction site has been fully arranged with temporary accommodation and accommodation for about 150 workers to ensure health and maintain the construction workforce with the goal of completing the project on schedule, serving the travel needs and socio-economic development of local people.
