On the morning of September 15, the Military Command of Da Nang City organized excavation and exhumation of 17 sets of remains of martyrs being buried at the people's cemetery in Go Cao village, Thu Bon commune (Duy Tan commune, Duy Xuyen district, former Quang Nam), to be taken to Hiep Duc martyrs' cemetery.
Notably, when opening the grave and peeling off each layer of soil, the task force discovered many artifacts including umbrellas, hammocks, leather wallets, brushes and some other items.
These artifacts are particularly meaningful because before excavation, functional forces determined that the tomb had been exhumed and moved many times, so the possibility of preserving bones, teeth and personal belongings is not high.
The appearance of the parachute also coincides with the story of Mr. Vo Dinh The (businessman in Ho Chi Minh City, from Thu Bon commune, Da Nang city) - the person who directly exhumed for the first time, taking care of incense for 17 remains from 1988 to now.
According to Mr. The, at that time, 17 sets of remains were suddenly revealed during the construction of a project in Hiep Duc. Under the burial pit were rubber sandals, guns, parachutes and many items. In particular, he remembered that the arm bones of some remains were still tied with parachute ropes.
This detail was then further provided by veterans and witnesses during the verification process. According to the story, after a battle in 1970 in Hiep Duc, the fallen were taken to mass burial.
From 1988 to now, Mr. The and his family have moved, built graves, and cared for incense for 17 sets of remains in Thu Bon commune many times. The family also organizes annual death anniversaries and sets up separate worship halls at home.
After reviewing the dossier, taking witness statements and organizing a conference, on September 8, Da Nang City People's Committee concluded that the tomb buried by Mr. Vo Dinh The was a martyr's tomb.
According to the plan, after exhumation, 17 remains will be taken to Hiep Duc Martyrs Cemetery and continue to be buried together in a collective grave. The memorial service and burial are expected to be held on September 17.
