On November 4, the Can Tho City Hydrometeorological Station issued a flood warning bulletin in the area with a level 2 risk of natural disasters due to high tides.
In the past 2 days, the water level on rivers and canals in Can Tho City has risen due to the influence of the high tide of the 10th lunar month.
The highest peak tide level appeared on November 3 on the Hau River at Can Tho Hydrological Station Hmax at 7:00 p.m. at 1.99 m; approximately at alarm level 3 (0.21 m higher than the same period in 2023 - October 3 of the lunar calendar).
This morning (November 4), the highest peak tide level on the Hau River at Can Tho Hydrological Station at 5:30 a.m. Hmax was 1.92m; the highest alarm level 2 was 0.02m.
According to Lao Dong Newspaper reporters on the morning of November 4, many inner-city roads in Ninh Kieu District were dry. In particular, the roads in the Ninh Kieu Wharf area, which used to be deeply flooded during high tides, are now clean and not flooded.
Selling breakfast in the Ben Ninh Kieu area, Ms. My Lan (36 years old) said that during the high tide of the 9th lunar month, Ngo Quyen, Le Thanh Ton, Ly Thuong Kiet streets... in this area were always submerged in water, making it very difficult for people to travel and do business.
“For the past two days, when the tide has been high, I have been setting up my stalls to sell since 6am, but I have not seen any flooding. All activities and purchases have been carried out smoothly,” Lan said happily.
Many people living and doing business in Ben Ninh Kieu area expressed their joy when the locality had preventive solutions, building high walls and sandbags to prevent river water from overflowing into sidewalks, parks, roads, and avoiding flooding of people's houses and shops.
However, some residents believe that to see the effectiveness of these solutions, they need to wait and see in the coming days, when the tide rises (possibly on the 15th day of the 10th lunar month), whether water will flood the streets in the Ben Ninh Kieu area or not.
Previously, to cope with the high tide in early October of the lunar calendar, the locality implemented a tidal barrier project in the Ninh Kieu Wharf area.
The construction unit built a wall along the Can Tho River bank, and built sandbags from the passenger wharf to Guest House No. 2 to prevent river water from overflowing. After completion, the height of the water-retaining embankment in this area was raised to 2.5m, higher than the historical high tide peak in 2022 (2.27m).
Can Tho City Hydrometeorological Station forecasts that this evening (November 4), the highest peak tide level on Hau River at Can Tho Hydrological Station at 7:30 p.m. Hmax is 2.05m; 0.05m higher than alarm level 3.
The peak water level on the city's rivers and canals continued to rise and exceeded alert level 3 on November 5. After that, the water level dropped rapidly in the following days. The peak water level appeared daily in the early morning from 6:00 to 8:00 and in the evening from 18:00 to 20:00.
According to the Can Tho City Hydrometeorological Station, this is a high tide with a peak tide exceeding alert level 3. During the days of high tide combined with heavy rain, it will cause flooding in low-lying areas and inner-city riverside areas of the city.
