Most recently, on the evening of September 13, a heavy rain lasting about 2 hours turned the area in front of the hospital gate into a river, making it very difficult for people and patients to travel. This is not the first time this area has been severely flooded, because for many years, whenever Quang Ngai City has had heavy rain, the area of Quang Ngai General Hospital has been one of the "pioneer" flooded spots.
Talking to reporters, Mr. Tran Dinh Truong - Head of the Urban Management Department of Quang Ngai City said that for a long time, the investment in the drainage system of Quang Ngai City has not been uniform, causing many problems, the height of the pipes in each place is different, which is the cause of flooding. In particular, the area of Quang Ngai General Hospital "suffered" because the pipes were too bad. Patients and doctors had to wade in and out of the hospital every time there was heavy rain.
Mr. Tran Dinh Truong said that the immediate solution during this year's rainy season is to send forces to be on duty, open all manhole covers to collect water, monitor the drainage level and clear blockages. At the same time, go 1,000mm deep into the drainage pipe, find a favorable location, and build another water collection point. This will temporarily limit flooding; after the rain stops, the water will drain faster. Do not let the situation of heavy flooding and slow drainage happen like the one that just happened in the afternoon rain on September 13, 2024.
Regarding the long-term plan, Mr. Truong said he would propose rebuilding the water pipeline in the area. At the same time, he would check behind the hospital, create collection pipes, and support drainage to Tran Te Xuong street instead of pouring into the hospital gate.
"To fundamentally solve the flooding problem in the hospital area, the entire drainage system needs to be rebuilt. We have to survey during the rainy season and turn over each manhole to determine the exact cause. If we do it during the dry season, we won't be able to make a comprehensive assessment," said Mr. Truong.
Meanwhile, the leader of the Quang Ngai City Land Fund Development and Investment Project Management Board said that in addition to rebuilding the pipeline in the hospital area, flood prevention also depends on the construction of Yen Phu Lake (in the planning but not yet constructed) and the main drainage pipe from Yen Phu Lake to Bau Giang River.
