On the morning of September 21, information from the Branch of Vinh Railway Signal Information Co., Ltd. - Dong Le Railway Signal Information Enterprise said that the first freight train has safely passed through the Khe Net railway tunnel, Tuyen Son commune, Quang Tri province.
Khe Net railway tunnel is expected to be put into trial operation in 6 days before official train operation on the North-South railway line.
Khe Net railway tunnel belongs to the railway renovation project through Khe Net Pass, which started construction in March 2024. The project is implemented by the Ministry of Transport (old) in coordination with the People's Committee of Quang Binh province (old) and the Korea Economic Development Cooperation Fund.
The project has a total capital of more than 2,000 billion VND, using ODA loans from the Korea Economic Development Cooperation Fund and counterpart funds from the Vietnamese Government. This is the first railway project in Vietnam to use ODA loans from this fund.
Khe Net Pass is more than 10km long, connecting the Huong Hoa area with Kim Hoa. Previously, the railway section through the pass had 43 dangerous curves, the train speed was limited to below 30km/h, causing the travel time through this area to last about an hour.
The railway renovation project through Khe Net pass is being implemented to remove the "bottleneck" on the North-South railway line. When completed and officially put into operation, the project will contribute to improving infrastructure, increasing train speed and shortening travel time through the pass area.
