Project worth tens of billions to urgently rescue Cau River bank

Thai Nguyen - The embankment project to overcome landslides on the Cau River bank in Nha Long commune (Phu Binh district) aims to ensure safety and reduce damage caused by floods.

The historic flood in September 2024 caused many areas in Thai Nguyen to be submerged in water. The flood caused the water level of the Cau River to peak at 2,881 cm, 67 cm higher than in 1959.

The rising water caused a part of the area near the riverbank in Thanh Dam hamlet (Nha Long commune) to seriously erode. Some areas sank and eroded the bank, making people feel insecure. The local government was forced to relocate dozens of households and dismantle a series of houses along the riverbank.

Faced with the above situation, the People's Committee of Thai Nguyen province has decided to issue an urgent construction order for the embankment project to overcome the erosion of the Cau river bank in Thanh Dam hamlet (Nha Long commune, Phu Binh). The total estimated cost is 25 billion VND.

The project is invested by the Management Board of Construction Investment Projects (BQL) of Agricultural and Rural Development Projects (DTXD). The goal when completed is to overcome the situation of landslides on the Cau River bank, ensuring the safety of life and property for dozens of households along the riverbank.

According to PV on January 3, workers and machinery were mobilized to implement the project. The riverbank area is under construction to form a 500m long embankment. Some locations are being used to block water, then proceed to build embankments and pour stone piles.

Ms. Duong Thi Loan (Thanh Dam hamlet, Nha Long commune) said that the area along the Cau river bank has seriously eroded. During the recent flood, her family had to move to ensure safety. Many areas along the river bank have eaten deep into their gardens. People are extremely worried as danger is always lurking.

"The construction of the embankment in Thanh Dam hamlet area has made everyone very excited. People have been waiting for the embankment to ensure safety for households along the riverbank. The project was implemented very promptly to ensure the safety of people's lives and property.

I hope the project will be completed soon so that in the following flood seasons, people will no longer have to worry and feel insecure. During the recent flood, people here could not eat well, could not sleep well, and were worried," said Ms. Loan.

On January 3, speaking with Lao Dong Newspaper reporter, Mr. Nguyen Van Manh - Chairman of Nha Long Commune People's Committee - said that the project is in the initial stage of construction. According to the plan, it will be completed in May 2025 at the latest.

"The project is of great significance, ensuring safety for households in Nha Long commune, thereby creating favorable conditions for people to stabilize and develop socio-economy. Previously, when landslides occurred, people were very worried, greatly affecting their daily lives," the leader added.
