Causes of yellow water and mermaids
According to the report, from the beginning of 2025 to now, the Company has received many reports from people and press agencies about the situation of yellow and cloudy domestic water in some areas of Soc Trang City (old).
Through inspection, the cause was determined to be the reduced water flow at the factories, while the unit is renovating, increasing capacity and investing in new water treatment technology to increase pressure and water supply to people in My Xuyen ward, Phu Loi ward and Soc Trang ward. Therefore, it has caused water disruption in some areas, causing local sedimentation and clouding at some times.
The company representative said that the quality and water pressure have improved, but there are still some areas where yellow and cloudy water appears. Upon receiving feedback from the people, the Company sent technical staff and workers to inspect, drain, and clean the pipeline until the water was guaranteed to meet standards. Currently, the water quality has been relatively stable.

Regarding production conditions, the Company currently manages and exploits an urban water supply system including 23 factories and water treatment stations. In Soc Trang and Phu Loi wards, there are 6 factories/stations exploiting from 24 underground water wells and 1 surface water factory in An Nghiep Industrial Park. However, the groundwater is gradually becoming saline, the water level is low, the reserve is not guaranteed, the quality of the water source is getting worse. The exploitable surface water source is located about 20 km away and there is no plan to build factories; the current locations have reduced traffic, and additional works have not been licensed.
To overcome this, the unit has put many new construction items into operation, applying Lamella filtration technology and disinfection using UV rays at Nguyen Chi Thanh Water Supply Factory, My Xuyen 3 Water Supply Factory and Cao Thang Water Supply Factory.
The company has also established 2 specialized teams to inspect and clean the pipeline network to limit the situation of retained water and cloudy yellow. At the same time, increase daily water testing, periodically send samples to independent units for quality control, and publicly announce them on the website. The unit is also looking for professional partners to carry out large-scale cleaning and drainage of the water transmission system.
Building new, increasing water plant capacity
The Company's leaders said that the unit is implementing many projects to improve quality and increase water supply capacity in Can Tho City and surrounding areas.
Accordingly, the filter tanks will be renovated simultaneously, the underground water treatment system will be invested in at the water supply plant at Phu Loi Water Supply Factory and Sung Dinh Water Supply Station, the reservoir and the circulation cleaning system will be installed; waiting for a license to build an additional plant at Phu Tuc Water Supply Station. The unit is also waiting for the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment to consider approving the project of drilling underground water wells and increasing capacity at Nguyen Chi Thanh factories, An Nghiep Industrial Park and Cao Thang Water Supply Station.
Notably, the project to build a water plant with a capacity of 20,000 m3/day and night in Sub-area 5E (Soc Trang Ward) is waiting for approval from the competent authority.
The company also proposed that the People's Committee of Can Tho City approve the increase of the capacity of existing factories to below 5,000 m3/day and night for existing qualified factories. The unit is completing land procedures and assessing environmental impacts to put into operation the completed drilling wells at Hung Loi Water Supply Station, Nga Nam, Ke Sach.
The leader of Soc Trang Water Supply Joint Stock Company affirmed that he will continue to monitor and implement solutions to overcome the shortage of clean water sources as soon as possible, as well as ensure the quality of domestic water for people in the coming time.
